Thanksgiving: Thankful for my farrier

I bought a 5 year old OTTB 1 1/2 years ago. In that time I’ve been on a roller coaster of progress and setbacks. Knocking off all of the things that have been making him sore through his back, each thing making him feel just a bit better each time. I am hopeful that I am finally at the end of the list of things to make him feel great.

So after having the vet out to try and check off the last (I hope) thing that has been making him sore, we decided to try a frog support pad with a wide web aluminum shoe. Vet calls farrier to describe what he wants done.

The farrier came out Monday to put on the new set up, and we were able to see major changes in his posture after the first shoe was put on. I had a phone call at the end of the visit that opened up some free time for me, so I told my farrier I was going to take my horse out for a ride that afternoon. My farrier called me first thing Tues morning to ask if I did ride, and if so how was my horse doing.

I have been using my farrier for 15 years. He’s always done a great job on my no problem horses. Always on time, always keeps appointments, and is in my area 2-3 times a week so if I have a loose shoe or have lost a shoe getting it fixed is a non issue. It is with this “problem” horse that I have come to REALLY appreciate that he is : reliable, compassionate, works great with my vet, and looks for feedback on what’s working and what’s not.

So I just wanted to say that in my horsey world I am thankful for a great farrier. As an aside, I could write the same thing about my vet.
