The Aintree Grand National is tomorrow

It’s at 5:15 pm British Time. I’m not sure what that would be for the US.

Several horses have withdrawn because it has been so wet. The H & H story doesn’t make clear whether that is because of lack of preparation or the condition of the course which is described as soft and heavy in places. Mc Manus’s favorite isn’t running because of the course condition, but two others have also withdrawn so far.

Using a Google search, it would appear that 5:15pm UK time is 12:15pm ET or 9:15am PT

TVG will be broadcasting it live.

I’ve caught of few of the races as Aintree this morning and yes, the field does look pretty wet/damp.

hope they all come home safe

Some sort of precipitation has been pissing down in the UK for weeks. You’d be half-baked if you ran a horse that preferred firm going. You can guarantee that the preparation is the best it could be for the prevailing conditions.

Tiger Roll Wins. I haven’t watched yet so don’t know if everyone got around safely or not. http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/racin…-finish-649716 video:

12 of the 38 starters actually finished the race, the rest either falling or pulled up.

The finish was very good as Pleasant Company about nipped Tiger Roll at the line

Saint Are fell but eventually returned to the stables.

I was worried as they directed the field around Bechers the second time around and the coverage showed a curtain up but I didn’t seen any reports of issues other than Saint Are who sounded like he fell at the Chair (fence 15). Bechers is fence 6.

There were a total of 12 completions from 38 starters and all horses and jockeys returned. The Tom George-trained Saint Are was reported to be in a “stable condition” having been assessed by vets after falling and had returned to the racecourse stables.

When they came back around & got diverted, my heart sank when I saw the curtain up. Here’s hoping it wasn’t anything fatal .

It was.

The horse death occurred in another race of the meet, not the Grand National (not that it makes it any better of course).

In better news, jockey Katie Walsh got around safely, riding the only grey and the only mare in the field, the lovely Baie Des Iles:

Apparently the screens up around Becher’s were for a fallen jockey, not a horse. Jockey is reported to be OK.
Saint Are is reported to be OK.

Thanks for clarifying MTHBW

My heart sank when I saw the screens up second time around at Bechers but was encouraged to read the post-race results that all horses eventually made it back to the stable area.

Evidently, but doesn’t surprise me, PETA had a field day with the one fatality over the 3 day meeting, the fatality occurring on Thursday.

I often think that while I don’t like that race horses get injured, some times catastrophically, that they at least are euthanized quickly and humanely after their injuries as compared to many horses that are hoarded or abandoned or sent to the knackers and suffer for potentially lengthy periods before their merciful death.
