The armed robbery...

Fascinating that people are still trying to make excuses for this guy-

His apology is crap- he apologizes for being less than candid- haha- that really does not explain his outright lie about the taxi incident. There was no taxi incident- it is on tape- an interview he gave-- so the lie can be verified BY HIS OWN WORDS…

So since he clearly lied about that- why believe anything else he said- hmmm:confused:

But still lots of people ignore that- poor little 30 plus year old child - and everyone knows these 3rd world countries are corrupt so poor little american guy got caught up in their corrupt system

COME ON

less than candid = you may have left some stuff out

lying= i made it up - aka when you say you were robbed in a taxi when that is an utter and complete lie

These guys were out partying- so probably still extremely drunk when this all went down. Have you ever had to remember events from when you were drunk? It can be hard to have the facts straight.
I have no doubt these guys thought they got robbed. Did they? I don’t have all the facts for that. Are they still really really stupid? Yes. Should we victim shame them just because they thought something happened one way, when it happened the other? No.

Oh please. He imagined the taxi :confused:or he made the whole thing up to cover his asinine behavior thinking rightly so that many would believe him.

I have some swampland in florida for you…

BTW They did not look out of their minds drunk in the cc videos

The Brazilian authorities have every right to take them to task for their lies .

And now that you mention it, and now that I saw a little of his reality show, I’m thinking, how totally stupid was his thinking, to think that people would hear only his lies, and believe them, and that no one would think to check up on his story, that there wouldn’t be any evidence of or witnesses to what really happened? Is he really that stupid? Or does he really think he is protected from all that because of what he is (Olympic athlete, rich white boy, whatever)?

I really think he has got more problems than just ego and entitlement. I really think he is mental.

I haven’t been paying very close attention, but was it his mom who brought the whole robbery story up in the first place? Maybe he just started out by telling her a fib about how he ran out of cash, then made the gigantic error of doubling down on it when the whole story went public.

Not that he should have done either of those things, of course.

They and he are idiots. But the security guards detained all four of them using guns …and released them once they handed over money…if that had happened in the us while one or two might have been charged w property damage …since you can’t charge for stupidity…i am not crime whiz but i watch tv (ha) could not the security folks have had multiple counts against them for all four for false imprisionent assault robbery kidnapping???

The taxi can be seen in the video. They were told to get out of the taxi by a security guard. So he didn’t imagine a taxi.
Think of it this way. You are drunk and in a foreign country where it is very common to be robbed. You may or may not have broken down a door (this could be true, this could be the fabrication of the gas station. What better excuse for a robbery than that the people owed me the money?) and suddenly a guy that probably speaks no English is demanding you leave the taxi, has a GUN and makes you sit on a curb, then demands your money. You would think you got robbed. Is the guy stupid and mixed up or lied about parts of what happened? Yes. Does he believe he got robbed? Yeah, probably. Is he going to say just about anything to not get stuck in a foreign country? Definitely.

This is akin to professional PR spin.

If he thought he was robbed he had EVERY opportunity to report same to his team administration. They would have involved the Games management and the process would have gone forward. He didn’t have to talk to the police or the press or anybody else without the support of IOC, Games, or even U.S. Embassy support. Just the folks who were in charge of his event. He didn’t do this. He had at least two major, public chances to speak candidly and failed to do so on either occasion. Instead he spun a Big Story about a House of Cards and when the house collapsed (on his companions, not him, because he had hurriedly left the country) he continued to support the Big Story until it became obvious that he was lying. Then he admitted it!!!

G.

but just because he is stupid does not negate the video as SD relayed…it is not PR. The video confirms the part of story about being in a taxi, being approached and made to get out. Having gun pointed at them and turning over money. It does not show claimed property destruction. While the swimmers were idiots and tried to cover their stupid deed (because they could get in trouble about that with federations) I am guessing the Brazilians knew the security conduct was on a slippery slope and had to save face themselves and got the last spin.

You can’t get money from somebody even if you deserve it by pointing a gun at someone and telling them they can’t leave until they pay…even the police can’t do that.

Security could have asked for their id while swimmers were in taxi and used other channels instead they escalated it by making them get out. Etc etc.

Umm … on what planet? Someone with a gun can pretty much get whatever he asks for. It’s not right, but it’s definitely possible. “Even” for “the police.”

As for ordering them out of the car, don’t police even in the US do that for their own safety? Because in a car a weapon can be more easily concealed than out of the car?

nah. by all accounts lochte was the person who escalated the situation…

Crockpot no idea why you are so wild to criminalize these swimmers. Yes they were idiots but they needed to relieve themselves urgently and obviously Brasil is not as luxurious in that regards like the US. Is it necessary to destroy their lifes? Nobody got harmed…

Things parents teach their children:

Don’t lie.

Go before you get in the car.

Simple childhood lessons, meant to remembered when you are a grown-up.

I could add to that, “Don’t drink,” but some people just do.

They had enough presence of mind to pee in the bushes. That was sensible, given the circumstances. Is that enough to get guards pulling guns on you? I don’t think there is any missing footage on that security tape. I think that is a concoction of Lochte’s lawyer.

But I don’t really know and I really don’t care. I am OD’d on the OG.

Why are some so desperate to prove them innocent victims of a massive Brazilian conspiracy to defame them?

Their lives are not ruined unless they decide to make this the central point of them.

This kind of reminds me of an incident a few years back where an U.S. airline captain, for AA I think, got mad at Brazilian Customs for something and when they took his picture for record purposes he “flipped the bird” to the camera. That got him a trip to the local lockup, caused the flight he was supposed to fly to be cancelled, and stirred up another big social media “hoo-rah.” There were all kinds of conspiracy theories floated about “what was really going on.” What was really going on was a 50 year old guy acting like a stupid teenager by showing the WOGs he was NOT going to intimidated by their “police state tactics.” All he did was demonstrate that Ron White is a Prophet For Our Time on things like this.

It’s over and done. If there are long term consequences then that’s the way the banana peels.

Moral of the Story: Doing stupid stuff in foreign countries is particularly stupid.

I detest the use of pejoratives but if you’re going to use them, use them accurately. I think you meant “spic” not “wog.”

Actually I hope you meant neither. Even if you were just putting words in the captain’s mouth. You could have used an inoffensive term to make your point.

That incident, BTW, happened 12 years ago.

No idea what you are raving on about there…Bizarre

I used the term as the Captain would have used the term. The term was used advisedly; your alternative is incorrect as they speak Portuguese in Brazil, not Spanish. That’s what he did; it’s what he intended to do. That happened just after, IIRC, my trip to Brazil in 2003. I was appalled by his behavior and apologized to my hosts, by e-mail, for his “ugly American behavior.” They were very gracious in their responses to me, but not exactly fond of Americans in general at that point.

Once again, doing stupid stuff in a foreign country is particularly stupid.
