The armed robbery...

As others have said, Brazil is a third world country and Rio is a nasty, nasty place; filled with more corruption than its share.

British and Australian athletes were robbed.

I still believe these swimmers were robbed. The fact that they were drunk and disorderly beforehand, doesn’t mean they weren’t victims.

I wonder if this were a story about a female athlete being attacked if the opinions would be different, but I digress…

Now that Lochte is singing the “I take full responsibility” song and saying how bad he felt for his teammates, I wonder: Will he step up and reimburse the other swimmer who had to cough up the $10,000+?? Or is he going to leave the kig hanging out to dry?

I hadn’t thought of that. Good question.

It’s unfortunate that it sounds like he was the one who led the others astray, even though he’s the oldest and most experienced of the four of them.

I wonder what the opinions would be if these guys molested or harassed a bunch of girls while drunk.

Crockpot no idea why you are so wild to criminalize these swimmers. Yes they were idiots but they needed to relieve themselves urgently and obviously Brasil is not as luxurious in that regards like the US. Is it necessary to destroy their lifes? Nobody got harmed…[/QUOTE]

“Nobody got harmed”??? Small gas station owner gets associated with an armed robbery in the international media, his property is damaged by Olympic swimmers who probably have pretty good kick action, his security guard is slandered in the press, the country which has struggled mightily to stage a world-class Olympics sustains a black eye from liars.

I’d say that’s pretty much a scorched earth of harm for 3 drunk louts to leave behind them.

?? I guess now every wants to get their gas at this famous station. He got some instant money on the spot for the damage and for the security guard it was at least not a boring night…
My son was shocked when he head that peeing in the bushes at night costs $11000 … I am not a man but I would still prefer to pee in the bushes then into my pants in case of an emergency…

Heartless and silly.

Look up “spic.” I did not use it incorrectly. You, OTOH, used “wog” incorrectly.

Actually now both of us have been incorrect in using both words because both are bad words.

So to any who were offended by my using either or both words, I apologize.

Enough of this.

I used the term as the Captain would have used the term. The term was used advisedly; your alternative is incorrect as they speak Portuguese in Brazil, not Spanish. That’s what he did; it’s what he intended to do. That happened just after, IIRC, my trip to Brazil in 2003. I was appalled by his behavior and apologized to my hosts, by e-mail, for his “ugly American behavior.” They were very gracious in their responses to me, but not exactly fond of Americans in general at that point.

Once again, doing stupid stuff in a foreign country is particularly stupid.

How do you know what term the captain would have used?

I used “spic” correctly. Go look it up. You used “wog” incorrectly.

Now we are both incorrectly using bad words.

Enough already.

The fine is for filing a false police report and making false statements to the police and other authorities. A similar fine would be levied in any U.S. city for someone doing that.

I don’t think he is singing a song so much as he is parroting someone who told him things to say. His lawyer? His mommy? The repetition of some words and phrases interspersed with obvious total lack of ability to think under pressure. I don’t think he feels bad about his teammates. I hope he will reimburse the other guy.

The constant use of “over-exaggeration” tickled me. An exaggeration is already about “over” – so an “over-exaggeration” is way over the top!

And the fake crying. IME people tear up before they start to sniffle and gulp and clear their throats. I saw no tears, no runny nose, no convincing physical evidence of emotion.

Woah there. Where was it ever even suggested that these men would molest women? Where did that even come from? That is really uncalled for.

I agree, StormyDay. That was totally out of line.

I didn’t hear him take any responsibility. He wouldn’t even answer any question put upon him. Just floundered around making no sense and dodging the issue. I thought maybe he was a relative of Hillary. Sounds just like her.

It wasn’t. It was a “what if?” And it was perfectly reasonable.

Ask yourself this HYPOTHETICAL: If any 4 young men/athletes at the Olympics (or anywhere else) got drunk and raped/assaulted a woman, and their defense was “we were young and inexperienced” what would your reaction be?

There is a huge difference between lying/destruction of property and rape. The fact that you would ever consider comparing the two is a dishonor to anyone who has ever had to suffer through molestation or rape. The fact that you would ever think the two were anything alike or could be compared is appalling to me.

Isn’t it kind of very mean to bring this into a thread about 4 young men relieving themselves in the bushes at night because access to the restroom was tricky???

To the commenter slagging rio for being dirty and dangerous, have you been to many cities? ?

Been to Seattle or dc or Boston recently? Been to Paris or Brussels or Dublin recently? I can tell some great stories about my time in cities around the world, like when I was dragged down an alley in Paris or when i lived in Dublin and the cool thing was people being robbed by hypodermic needles in the neck with “tainted blood” or chemicals? Or of course being from Seattle where my few years living in the university district involved the only time in my life I’ve gotten to walk by crime scenes and dead bodies on the street. And multiple drug related homicides on my street. And the awesome times living in Washington dc where among other things drug dealers would follow me home from the metro.

Seriously, Rio is a major world city…maybe get out more and understand that any and all of these places have dodgy areas and shady people. And that clearly shady awful people can also travel. And be Olympic athletes.

I wish Brazil would simply cane lochte like that idiot kid in Indonesia, was it?
