the barn bitch is leaving!

I worked at a local horse hospital as a nurse and let me tell you, I LOVED the patients but couldn’t stand the owners. My stories could fill a short novel but the point is, owners/boarders probably don’t realize how they behave around “staff” sometimes. It can range from friendly to indifferent to downright rude. And many owners/boarders can be very nosy, asking questions about other horses/owners, etc. instead of minding their own business.

Based on my personal experience as “staff” I can empathize with this person about being crabby. It’s a very different perspective from just being a boarder.

Yes, best for all concerned that she moves on.

while i totally get what you are saying, our barn is not like that at all. it is a trail barn, no one shows. The boarders are mostly middle class women struggling to afford to keep their horses. We are not snobbish at all, we don’t treat the barn staff like underlings. In fact, like i said, i’m the type to bring the staff coffee or hang out with them while they work. all the boarders at the farm at this time are down to earth and not demanding. All we ask is clean water, decent hay and feed them when they need it. i pay the BM to fly spray my horse, and others have similar arrangements for fly spraying. BB is just miserable all the time. You can walk into the barn one day and she’s your best friend or the next day and she hates your guts.

Hypothetically speaking and with a collective “you”… here’s another perspective from a retired barn manager…

If you are hanging in a stall doorway carrying on about your horse, your job, your personal life while I am trying to clean 6 stalls so I can start the evening turn-in and feed, I might would be a bit stand-offish as well. If I stopped work to chat with you, then someone may consider that “wasting time”. If I try to nod and say “uh-huh”, “gotcha”, to every little piece of conversation you’re offering WHILE I AM CLEARLY WORKING, it’s really my way of trying to say “I’m busy and I have a lot of work to do to take care of all these horses”, then please take a hint and go groom your horse.

At any rate, to someone who has never actually had to do barn work, it may be a bit hard to understand.

Hopefully the peace will soon be restored.

It’s not like that. if i felt i was taking their time i would not bother them. Usually we are talking about them. Me asking them how they are doing, how is their family, and i don’t block the stall door, but stand out of the way. and who said i have never done barnwork? i WAS the morning person at one of the barns i kept my horses at.

Yes, I’ve known a few barns where the barn staff were less than friendly and i tend to just keep out of their way but as I’ve gotten older I also realise that the way some people behave has probably got nothing to do with me. Many people seem to struggle with depression and personal problems which make them seem very moody and unpredictable. Glad that the barn will become a happier place for you.

Well she finally left on saturday before daylight. WooHoo!! I made brownies for everyone at the barn. We are all breathing much easier since she has been gone. The house was trashed. the BO had 5 days to get the house livable again. they had 3 dogs and 2 cats in the house and the cats peed everywhere. that smell never comes out, so BO has had his friends and employees helping him rip out flooring and sub-flooring. What a shame some people live like pigs. ( actually pigs live cleaner than this). New renters moving in on friday or saturday, so hopeful that they can get it all done in time. The barn work is not as organized as it was, but it is all getting done, and we don’t mind, bc the tension is gone.

Glad the ‘Zitch’ is gone ~ enjoy the barn again !
