The best and worst prizes at shows

I’m spinning off the AQHA Hunt Seat Equitation topic because I get the sense other people have stories.

Best prize: I won a massage kit awhile ago that has truly been my favorite thing. Has one of those body rollers, spiky balls, and some great gel cool packs + gel eye mask. I think I use all of that weekly. Kids at the show were like “ugh boring prize” and all the adults were ecstatic :joy:

Worst prize: I didn’t win this, but I saw it happen–for SS and childrens pony hunters years ago at a local show, they handed out bottle openers to the winners. Some parents thought it was hilarious; others not so much…

Who else has had some good (and not good) prizes?

One class I was in had a leather halter and lead as the prize. I was daydreaming about that halter and missed the command to halt from a canter. Oops.

I’m old school and like trophies.

Best: cash payback
Worst: YE Reserve Irish anti-sweat cooler. Everyone got size 82. My horse was a 78 :expressionless:
I kept the embroidered patch:

My friend won a lovely cooler proclaiming her “Metal Final Champion 2019.”

It was at a horse show, not a Battle of the Bands.

My sister was very excited to be called up to the ring for the presentation of awards for the Children’s Pony Hunters. She had heard that the champions would be awarded coolers, and she had not won one before, so she was beside herself. Up she goes with her lazy fat pony, who wanted no part of the prize-giving. In comes the awards team, all smiling. And in comes… a wheeled tailgate cooler filled with cold drinks. She did her very best to smile for the presentation in the ring, but lost it and bawled when she realized she had not won the type of cooler she thought she was getting. Imagine all that excitement and such a letdown! But it was a fantastic prize- a 72" cooler would not have done her a lick of good in her life (see next story…) but that Igloo came to every horse show for years after that.

That’s a good idea.

My horse wears a 78. So far he has won an 80, an 82, and an 84 in scrims, Irish Knits, and wool dress sheets. The 80 scrim was fine over tack. The 82 Irish Knit shrunk, so that worked out fine too. I put the dress sheet on him and he looked like he was playing dress up in father’s clothes. His “little brother” (my sister’s junior hunter) was actually an 84, so when that horse won a 78" dress sheet, my sister and I just traded.

The joke about the 84 was that it was from a benefit show held at our farm. The prize donor had ordered many 84s, a couple of 72s for the pony divisions, and one lone 78. The barn manager and I worked together to gather all the prizes and allocate them to each class. I told the barn manager deadpan that I intended to win the class I did end up winning, and so we needed to allocate the 78 to that class. She laughed and said “yeah, sure, whatever” and we did put the 78 aside for that class, but there was a mixup on the day and it had already been given to the winner of another division. So 84 it was!

 And yet… and yet… when I travel down to Phoenix/Scottsdale and show, this actually would be a welcomed award.

A billion years ago, before WEC Ohio was WEC and was just Roberts Arena, I was there with my large pony one winter. There as a whole table full of completely random prizes for blue ribbons that you could take your pick of. Nothing branded with show logo or anything, but clearly things they had gone to Walmart or wherever and picked up. I had a great weekend and wound up winning a class. I was so excited because I never won “stuff”. My division was one of the last ones of the show so the prize table was pretty picked over by time I won my class. I came home with a green end table lamp. It was either that or an outdoor patio thermometer. The lamp wasn’t the worst prize in the world, but not exactly what I was going for as a 16yr old kid. I kind of wish I still had the lamp because it’s just so random.

I love the embroidered vests and jackets. They’re perfect barn apparel, and great reminders of my horses and our adventures. Several of my former show partners have died, and seeing their names and dates on the jackets always make me happy.

I would have treasured that thing until the end of time! Too funny!! :joy:

It’s been a minute since I’ve had apparel as a prize! Those are good. Wonder if WEC will pick that up again this year.

Last year WEC had backpacks which, actually, they may be the second thing I treasure. It’s a REALLY nice backpack, and I know it’s meant for the show ring but surprisingly it’s been the ideal travel bag. Have taken it on all my domestic and overseas work trips. Ergonomic/doesn’t kill my back.

I have some old school silver trophy plates and trays from my junior days! I should take the time to polish and display them

Is it really just the big national shows like Devon and indoors that have trophies these days? Or are any other shows handing them out?

It’s a funny story. I sent a picture of my friend holding her prize to another friend, etc., and it quickly ended up on Facebook tagged with the show manager’s name, like haha, what a typo. Within minutes the cooler was confiscated and my friend eventually received a replacement.

Good old social media!

I have the picture and would post it, except I’m sure it would get back to the guy!

I’m in the western world and new to my discipline, so I’m excited to win my first buckle. The national association sends one after you reach a certain earnings.

The ranch association has handed out embroidered camp chairs with their logo, the class, and exhibitors name on them that look great. I’d be happy with one of those.

As someone who has helped to organize horse shows, I’m glad not to see any of the prizes I’ve put together on here so far. It can get tough with donated prizes, though; sometimes a tack shop will donate a bunch of stuff that never sold and you can tell it didn’t sell for a reason, or you’ll get things in bizarre sizes and really hope that it fits the winning horse or rider.

For one show, we had a sponsor provide some quite lovely glass plates with the horse show’s name, the year and the division name engraved into the back (so it was a smooth useable plate and you could read the prize information through it). I thought it would be a great prize (on top of the monetary prizes for each placing) - they would look great in prize ceremony photos, and you could either display it or actually use it as a serving plate at home or in a tack room.

I was very disappointed when I was walking around the horse show and heard a trainer saying “What a useless prize; what am I supposed to do with this?” I guess we’re all different?

Favorites: embroidered throw blanket, nice quality/fancy spur straps, big horse cookie jar, gift card to tack store, backpack, garment bag, engraved water bottle.

Least favorites: scrims/coolers/blankets (maybe this is unpopular, but collecting a bunch of scrims over the years that end up in the community ‘donor’ pile at my barn just seems wasteful to me), a curry comb, a hoof pick, and a random coasters.

The absolute WORST of them all? Olive oil. I kid you not, when I was a junior, I was given “fancy” olive oil as a prize for a children’s pony class

You, my friend, are not a 10-year-old pony kid.

The sponsor had made the same mistake as my sister but in the opposite direction. Not horsey people. They asked what was typically awarded to winners and were told “a cooler.” I gather they were bemused at what we do with them. It really was a super useful prize, and the sponsor was very generous- they packed them full of ice and all kinds of drinks, and it was a hot summer show! I would be delighted to win one of those myself.

I would love to have something like this. I haven’t won so many trophies as to run out of storage space- I have them all on display.

Oh, there are still shows handing out trophies, depending on your definition of “trophy.”

There’s a decent series of open schooling shows down south of me, and I go a couple times a year to tune up my horse. My husband thinks the trophies are cool, I suppose because he can relate to them. Trophy = winning.

But once I collected this handsome trio, I had to draw the line and now just stick to the ribbons.

Not a kid but I’d love to win gourmet olive oil

Hah! I can definitely see now how it would be wanted if it actually was high quality.

I put the fancy in quotations because it was really just normal olive oil that they put a bow around…

ETA: gourmet was definitely the word I was looking for… thank you for finding the word for me!
