Between fly sheets, shoo fly leggings, fly masks, and fans blowing, I have rarely used fly spray this year. I have a bottle I got in May and it’s at least a 1/4 way full
I mostly use fly spray when riding (because they are protected when not riding the same way you mention). I wish I could make a bottle last that long
Oh I’ll play!
Farrier’s Formula Double Strength 11lb bag from SP increased $10 from 2022 to 2023
Strongid C2x 10 lb increased $5.30 from '21 to '23.
Pyranha Wipe N Spray increased $7.60 from '21 to '23.
Alushield Spray increased $5.75 from '18 to '23
On a good note I just went to the green guard muzzle website to order a new muzzle ( mare wore hers through) . 2 good things— Not only was the muzzle at the same price as the last one I bought in 2022, I got a discount on it and the 2 inserts I purchased and saved $22.
I’ve lucked out this year - bought two gallons of Equisect fly spray last year and had one left for this year. We don’t have big bitey bugs, and with masks and sheets I don’t go through a whole lot.
However, I paid $47 last year a gallon. Just looked at it’s $50/gallon. I was thinking it would be much worse based on prices in the feed store this year.
According to my local Facebook group Davis is going out of business. I wonder if that is why there have been some recent price changes?
Oh no! I’m going to have to stockpile!
FYI, SP seems to be the highest price on them by far (except random Amazon sellers). BigD & Schneiders still have them for $20, and I’ve found them in the $25 range at other shops. No idea why SP is so much higher than elsewhere. They’re $32 on Davis’s own website (which has no mention of closing).
Small_Change where do you live that Prascend is that expensive?
Here’s mine, in the horse world. I’ve had my now retired mare on Pentosan for years. I got it compounded from Wedgewood at a price of $250 to $350 for 100 ml, which is 20 doses. She would get a dose weekly for 4 weeks as a loading dose once a year, followed by either monthly or every 2 weeks.
There’s a non-compounded licensed form now, so Wedgewood has stopped making it. The new stuff is currently only available in single use vials for $75 to $90 a pop, or a 4 pack with a ~10% discount! Because horse people are all rich, don’cha know.
Regretfully, I’m going to stop giving my mare Pentosan.
I spray my horses stalls with this.
Yeah, but…price of fuel doubles. Does that mean that the 10,000 items in the truck should be double also? We are being asked to swallow this bull but CVS hiked it’s prices in 2021 then reported record profits for the same year. THAT’s price gouging.
Depending on what size you need, Schneiders and Big D are already out. I did find stock at Cheshire horse, same price. I need size Large for my mare.
Ughhh…
I have been using Pentosan too and had the same issue with the new version - that’s quite a price difference, and I can’t swing that every two weeks. My vet was able to find a compounded Pentosan with glucosamine for the same price as the previous compounded version of Pentosan. May be something for you to look into as well.
My vet also told me the same. She isn’t sure if her compounder will be making pentosan with glucosamine. I am hoping she gets is figured out before my last vial of pentosan is empty
I guess I will try Adequan. The Zycosan pricing is insane.
Christ, fly spray is 100 bucks a gallon at my local feed store!
Pre pandemic, they were usually pretty in line with online, but now they’re way up. SmartPak has had a few 20% off sales this year and I’ve loaded up there instead, buying four gallons at a time, in the $50-60 range depending on brand. They might have another this coming weekend! Highly recommend!
If I’m reading my spreadsheet correctly, UltraCruz Vitamin E pellets have quintupled from 4 cents per 1,000 IU in 2015 to 21 cents per 1,000 IU this July, and that’s with a slight autoship discount. I believe most of that increase was just the past couple years.
I did this for a while. I think I used a mix of water, white vinegar, permethrin, neem oil, and citronella. It helped about as much as commercial sprays do (which personally I think is not a lot), and was a lot cheaper! I gave up on fly spray almost entirely in the last 2 years. I keep a bottle of UltraShield Black for vet/farrier appointments, dressage tests, and trail rides. I’m pretty sure it does basically nothing but make me feel like I tried, as the flies often don’t even give me the courtesy of waiting a few minutes before landing again. No way is it lasting for hours of turnout. Also our most offensive flies during turnout are horseflies and greenheads, which hunt by sight. So anyway, I gave up on fly spray and am happy to not be pouring that money down the drain.
I did bite the bullet and order Adequan. There’s a $20 manufacturer rebate so that’s something I guess.

Smartpak:
Centaur bell boots $20.95 in 2015, now $28.95
Magnesium $64.26 in 2017, now $71.59
Tiger’s Tongue $5.95 in 2018, now $7.99
What I went digging for - KL Select bell boots, $37.90 in 2019, now $44.00
These aren’t as bad of a jump as I had expected.
Ivermectin, however… $2.99 in 2011 and $10.50 now.
This doesn’t apply to horses at all but I am so happy about it and it is so rare for prices to go down on much of anything…
The milk replacer I use on my Angus bottle calf has dropped a whopping $10 since I bought my last bag.
And just because---- here is Fred 3 1/2 months old . To make it horse related my gelding adores him!
