The cost of living, Davis bell boots, and Smartpak (a silly thread)

Ha, I’m entertained that an ad for SmartPak’s 20% off labor day sale is showing up in this thread!

I’m in the interesting position of boarding my horse in a barn where all but certain natural fly sprays are banned (including EcoVet, which is “natural” and works really well, but kind of nasty to deal with.) Mare is out 24/7 with a nice shed that has a solar-powered fan, and this summer the BO added curtains covering the fronts of all the sheds except for my mare’s, which has an opening because she wigged out about the curtains.

I was worried… but honestly, I don’t think fly sprays make enough of a difference to be upset. Mare is in a fly mask and fly boots, fly sheet at night plus in the daytime if it’s cool enough (she has anhydrosis). Freedom 45 spot-on is allowed, so I do that (it works better for ticks than flies IME.) She gets Zephyrs Garden ointment as a barrier along her midline, udder, and chest when the black flies or midges are bad. Last summer when I first moved her, I tried a couple of the natural fly sprays, and they didn’t do much.

I agree with this - physical barriers are more effective than most sprays. Boots, mask, and fans!

That said, actives we know work on humans will work on horses. There’s a mosquito spray at TSC I’ve used with good luck, and Pyhranha (sp) is the only spray that seems to do anything for black flies. Otherwise, OFF! for ticks cause at this point Lyme is more of a concern to me than anything.

Riding Warehouse still has davis bell boots, but the widest assortment of colors in M and S. I guess I will go stockpile as I use these for turnout since they don’t hold water or muck, and come in obnoxious colors so I can find them.

Well, yanno…
It cures COVID :unamused:

Wondering what my Fall ivermectin/praziquantel will cost

I use Gordon’s, mixed @ 1-1/2X recommended strength.
My shoer uses the CVD aerosol, but though it really seems to work, it’s pricy considering you’re paying for air :unamused:
For stalls I spray diluted pinesol (or generic equivalent).
Smells better & seems to help keep flies out of the stalls & aisle.

Has anyone tried the Schneider’s bell boots that look like Davis boots? They’re back ordered right now… wonder if they were white labeled from Davis?

Just went to order a few pairs from Davis to stockpile – great deal for 40% off, but shipping is flat $35

There’s free shipping at a certain order amount. Worth it to stock up!

Our supplier for vitamin E increased prices 4-5x what they were. We try to keep prices as low as we can and often decrease prices if we are able to get for a cheaper rate. We don’t like to do it :weary:
I don’t think we started pellets of that product until 2017. I started in 2016 and and we only had powder at the time.

You’re right! Looks like my earlier orders were actually powder. In Dec 2018 I paid $71.95 for a 10-lb bag of pellets and now it’s $109.95, so just a 50% increase.

I know I’m late, but I was searching for Thrush Buster, and finally got fed up and emailed the company.

They discontinued Thrush Buster - but good news!

They’re replacing it with Mustad ComfortMix Thrush Treatment (same company, same active ingredients). It’s now more gel-like formula with a smaller needle tip (similar to Tomorrow/Dry Cow syringes).

Interesting! Maybe now I will stop staining my hands

You’re right! They closed their doors in September 2023, but not a word was said. Kind of like Haygain now… sad that these things aren’t communicated.

Should I use them? Or put them away as an investment?
