The Crown

It’s no secret that Queen Elizabeth is an avid racing fan and any series about her life would have to tackle that. I was a little surprised that Episode 5 of the new season was almost all about that and addressed it in a thoughtful way. At one point, her character confesses that she wishes she could boot the weight of the crown and simply manage her breeding and racing stable. She even takes a bit of a world tour not to visit heads of state but to Deauville and Lexington and imagines what could have been.

I get that the racing stable was part of what made her a little remote in popular culture and it could be perceived as a hold over from a bygone era. But a scene where the Queen of England takes a picnic in a Kentucky pasture was fun to watch.

I’ve only seen the first season of The Crown, but I remember that one episode that year was also devoted to her horses and racing stable, which was great fun to watch.

I remember when she was here in Kentucky for the Derby in 2007. We live across the road from Lane’s End, and helicopters carrying the Queen and the Farishs passed over our house in the morning and then again in the evening after the race. Whenever she comes, she also visits other farms to look at stallions and she’s obviously a thoroughly knowledgeable horsewoman.

Racing remains a very popular sport in the UK with a lot of media coverage. It has a sociable image, a good day out, and is far more than just a vehicle for gambling. The Queen often has positive media coverage when she is enjoying herself at the races, as do many of her family, Zara Tindell has just gone onto the Board of Directors at Cheltenham racecourse.
