The Daily Dumb

Well when her JC registered name is Pew… I ended up calling her The Mare more than anything.

Shayney Mahaney was supposed to get a new name for obvious reasons, but it actually suits her sweet goofy weird snack-obsessed ditzy personality, so alas… her show halter is engraved with her JC name as above lol

Mine know theirs as well. I have changed one’s name entirely; the feral IDSH I now call Rory came with the name Tahoe, but he didn’t know it because the owner had abandoned him and the barn had done nothing with him beyond pin him against the wall for annual shots and then set him loose again, he was sold as part of a stableman’s lien. He wasn’t even halter broken when I got him, and he was two.

Not really : [https://cowgirlmagazine.com/horses-know-name/]

But anthropomorphize all you want. In the end, I think it would be hard to argue the name doesn’t matter more to the owner than it does to the horse. Based on your story you have a lot more contempt for the owner as a person than for the injustice of having a changed name.

Soooo, does she have Pulpit somewhere in her pedigree?

Subornation is not the same as subordination.

One is an appropriate title for a training session to invite 800 mortgage loan officers to; the other is not.

Yes . By Rock Pulpit, who is by Pulpit.

But I kept thinking Pepe le Pew… so she showed under “Confession” and was known as Drama or The Mare at the barn.

Pew. What a doozie!

I try not to change their names if I can help it. However, if New Pony is named “Starfire” or “Sunchaser” or something like that, name gonna be changed!

My off the track mare was Flow for Dash with the Flow. I named her Jello.

Hah! I rode a horse named “Jello” as a kid!

My current dog came to me from a rescue with a note from the foster to please leave her name.
Which is “Daisy”.
She said she felt for the poor dog, whose life had been serially upended, and at least she had her name, which she recognized.
So Daisy it is.
I’d have chosen something different, but all my creatures ultimately end up with several names, (for example the cat, who is Joule Meeps Ninjacat Boopis) so it’s NBD.

When I was a child I named my first pony Noodle. He didn’t come with a name though.

One of my friends is from England and she always told me it was dire bad luck to change a horse’s name. Unless they had a really stupid name in the first place. Like the horse I met named Couscous. ???
Yeah, change that - that’s just stupid.

@Ghazzu - I LOVE your cat’s name. :heart_eyes_cat: :heart_eyes_cat:

Yes your uncited article definitely proved your point…

I get you for the most part. However, when the new school-string pony comes into the barn with the name, “Shady Lady,” something has to change. Can you imagine going to your daughter’s first lead line class or W/T class and hearing the announcer say, “In the arena now is Jilly Jones riding Shady Lady!” Sorry to whomever gave this mare her first name!

Or how about the leopard spotted children’s pony named… Playboy.

It’s just the first of many that pops up with a simple google search but you’re one of those who is just going to believe anything you want without evidence anyway. Have fun judging other members of your equine community for something as petty as a name change.

Relax. This thread is supposed to be fun and funny. Judging someone for judging someone lol. Now that’s a daily dumb. :joy:

I had the odd experience of people wanting me to give Feronia a “barn name” because they thought horses should have a barn name that wasn’t their registered name (Mythic Feronia.) I found that odd. Now I will say that over the years, a few people have just not been able to pronounce her name. So she’s been called Fiona a lot, Felonia (!) etc

She’s also picked up suitable nicknames like “Barbie” or “Ferocious Feronia” - the latter from a trainer who really liked her. I sometimes call her Sweet Pea or Missy or Miss Mare.

I’m pretty sure I couldn’t stand to own a horse named “Dream come true”, so I’d have to change it back.
