Harzand!

Wow, that was a cracking finish.
Dermot Weld’s Harzand wins it for the Aga Khan.
Huge run from the favorite US Army Ranger for second, but the camber seems to have caught him out and caused him to drift.

I believe that makes Dermot Weld the first man to train a winner of a US and English Classic race.

The winner is by Sea The Stars. The runner up and third are by Galileo. That makes the mare Urban Sea the grand dam of the first three horses home. That’s a special achievement for a mare.

TVG played it delayed. Great race and what a challenging course!

What a gorgeous pedigree that Harzand has. Sire is Sea The Stars and his dam has another separate Herod line, Worden, and Delsy through Darshaan.

An Irish triple across the board. I thought US Army Ranger harmlessly lugged in a bit with no interference just before the wire. Tired? Great racing at Epsom. Has there ever been an in depth book on the Aga Khan’s breeding program? I know book stores in the UK and IR full of great equine reading.

Speaking of Aga Khan pedigrees, the AK had the runner up in today’s French Derby at Chantilly with Zarak. He is a son of the AK’s wonderful home bred super filly Zarkava, who of course won the Arc.
Here’s his pedigree, another lovely Aga Khan bottom line… http://www.pedigreequery.com/zarak3

So, Urban Sea and Zarkava, both fillies who won the Arc and then gave birth to top class race horses. Who says great race mares don’t make good broodmares?

Equibrit - Thanks. I have to look for a cheaper copy. The ones listed are a bit pricey.

This is probably worth a read too; http://www.amazon.com/Nasrullah-Forgotten-Patriarch-American-Thoroughbred/dp/1626190143

1960 by Mme Vuillier.

1.) The principal role of the mare is to improve the stallion.

2.) Today, the stallion’s racing record, the stakes won, the class,
and the amount of money won play important roles in breeding,
because a big winning stallion may become the founder of a new
series in the Vuillier System. Formerly, these were les important.

3.) The conformation of the Thoroughbred counts for little. It is the
pedigree that most important.

4.) The Aga Khan’s best race mares have not been and presently are
not his best broodmares. His best horses usually come from the
sisters and half sisters of the great winning mare.

Very interesting and very creditable thinking in 1960. Do you have a reference or link for this? I would love to read more on this.

That was from Dr. E.S. Montgomery (The Thoroughbred) good
chapter on breeding and pedigree.
