The Derby Trail 2023 thread

With all the defections I really am hoping Sun Thunder gets a good shot. Not only because I worked with him as baby but because I also picked him up in the futures pool earlier this year.

I’m going to go with the pick of my former student and say Confidence Game.

Time for my annual attempt to pick a few that might hit the board. Really tough this year, lots of lesser known horses. IMO it might be a mistake to assume anything about how the race will develop, not much to go on as far as past performances against quality competition. Who knows. Don’t feel strongly about any of them. Do like Tapit Thrice but maybe not for today, be delighted if he wins.

Going with Angel of Empire. Like a little longer odds and this race of full of those, Reincarnate, know he’s been disappointing but there have been some valid excuses and JV in the irons is hard to pass up.

Cant resist Cyclone Mischief, DR is wise and IO aggressive. As I type this he is 30-1. Why not?

Will go with a Japanese horse but the other one, Mandarin Hero. His Santa Anita Derby race was exceptional as was his jockeys ride. IMO.

May they all come back safe and the only drama be that of the race.

I’ll put my picks out there to the universe. They aren’t good this year.

Granted, I procrastinated this year and didn’t do my “homework” until yesterday. I don’t regret that; I would have been beyond frustrated as the field dropped like flies.

Absolutely illogical sentimental pick: Mandarin Hero. He has as good a chance as any year, though.

The three who I liked coming out of their last prep: Angel of Empire, Two Phils, and Derma Sotogake

It looked like a horse was pulled up early in the Pat Day Mile just now. I couldn’t see enough detail on my screen to see what was happening or which horse it was. Hope everything is okay.

ETA: It was Freezing Point. He was vanned off but walked onto the trailer.

Correct. Freezing Point.
ETA: he was euthanized as well.

Chloe’s Dream was euthanized after being pulled up in race 2.

Oh, no. That must have happened before I tuned in today.

And now the comments are rolling in like crazy all over social media.

stop racing
 track is bad
something is going on & the track, jockey, trainer, etc needs to be investigated
 horses are drugged too much
 etc.

Yeah, social media. How about a story that the Derby favorite was not 100% and in an abundance of caution was scratched, disappointing his people and his followers, but for the good of the horse? No, that would be no fun.

And the other Derby scratches–two with fever, one not ready for the race, again for the good of the horses.

The fourth because the trainer is questionable and there needs to be a serious investigation about his practices.

Sounds like freezing point had fetlock or pastern injury (announcer just said ankle) and was just euthanized.

RIGHT! I feel like years ago, these precautionary scratches wouldn’t have happened. Glad to see it

Definitely heading in the right direction.

So that’s two today? Ugh. You hate to hear that ever, but on the sport’s biggest day (public viewing wise)

Let’s hope very hard that everyone comes home safe and sound for the rest of the day.

I saw the story about Cody, and Cody’s Wish. I know who I hope wins. I love that a stud horse is so gentle with Cody. Winning from behind, and by so far is amazing.

It’s been a very long, sleepless, emotionally taxing week for me. Cody’s Wish absolutely destroyed me, even though I already knew the story.

I swear, if something happened to Cody’s Wish it would have been a disaster. I was so relieved when he pulled up safely.

Cody’s Wish is such a pro. Circled the field like, “no worries, I got this”.

And Mike Repole is so classy. He’s been in the game long enough to know you can go from zenith to nadir in a heartbeat, but this one still had to sting. But there he is, determined to put the best face on the day and enjoy it with his family.

Since I don’t follow racing much other than the first Saturday in May and sadly, when scandal or tragedy strikes, I had to look up Cody’s Wish. And now I am blubbering like a baby.
