I hate, HATE, H.A.T.E. saddle shopping. Yet here we are. I did this song and dance last year with my jump saddle (my main discipline is show jumping) and ended up with a Voltaire Palm Beach that I love. Now I need a Dressage saddle that I love as much, after realizing the one I have (CWD SE05) fights with me. I got the CWD for a steal ($800) and don’t have a huge budget, but am fairly picky/ having a tough time settling for less than ideal. The saddle will be used on OTTBs (several) and I’d like a narrow twist, short flap! - this is a must as I am shorty and the standard 16in flap comes nearly to my ankle, small/ no blocks (the large blocks hit me in the wrong spots due to my shorty legs), and I’d love to get something that has grippy leather (tried an older Stubben with grain leather that had been worn smooth and oh boy was it slick). The short flap seems to be the hardest thing to find, I’ve found maybe a handful with a short (14in) flap and of the handful maybe half had a narrow twist. I am hoping to get my Bronze in 2024 and want to put this saddle thing to bed. Seriously wondering if there are saddle match makers where they find the saddle for a fee because I am so tired of searching. Please send help!
There is a Zaldi San Jorge with 14" flaps currently on eB. Seller says made for a TB and ridden in ~10 times so virtually new. 17.5"
Everyone hates saddle shopping
It’s really hard to suggest specific saddles without knowing the horse(s) shape.
Newer(ish) Stubbens are neither hard nor slippery any more, so don’t let that scare you off. If you find a saddle that otherwise works but doesn’t have the short flap you need, some (not all) flaps can be cut down and the blocks moved or changed. Depends on what’s going on under the flap and how it is constructed.
Generically speaking, I have a not-new (but not ancient) Stubben Tristan that is decently small blocked and narrow twisted, as well as an Amerigo Alto. The Amerigo is much more close contact feeling than either of my Stubbens (one new, one slightly older). Both cost less than $800. They are pretty different in terms of fit and shape of horse, though, and only my new Stubben has a short flap.
There used to be a service, Jen the Saddle Geek, that had a vast knowledge of most of the saddles in existence and could recommend models within a given budget based on tracings/measurements/pics. Unfortunately she is no longer doing business that way. I have not come across anyone else who has a similar depth of knowledge across lots of brands.
ETA: just on a quick google, slightly above what I’m guessing your budget is, but -
here’s an Albion with an extra short flap, medium tree: https://www.aikentackexchange.com/products/2007-albion-slk-ultima-dressage-saddle-17-5-seat-extra-short-flap-medium-tree-wool-flocked-panels
They also have several Voltaire dressage saddles that look to have short(er) flaps, if your budget can go that high.
And a JRD with a short flap, medium tree: https://www.dutchessbridlesaddle.com/product/jrd-17-5-m-short-flap-dressage-saddle-0897/
Just be aware that the Albion is stamped LH which means it’s not the one made for high withered horses (which would be stamped HH).
Trilogy.
They can be found OTR with short flaps, have a narrow twist, and mine fits my high withered guy
I love mine
