The EHV-1 saga continues..

“CDFA’s epidemiologic investigation indicates the Welsh Cross gelding and the Warmblood stallion both participated in the HITS (Horse Shows in the Sun) event in Thermal, Calif.,”

Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?

I don’t know how many of you have read this already( If this has already been posted about, sorry!) but apparently the EHV-1 outbreak wasn’t just limited to HITS Ocala but HITS Thermal as well…

HITS? How about NJ? How about Utah? Badminton? Illinois? Montana? How about the thermal outbreak had horses shipping in from WEF for the million?

http://www.thehorse.com/topics/diseases-and-conditions/reproductive-problems/equine-herpesvirus-ehv

So let’s not single out one venue without giving equal “credit” to the many others out there…

I was speaking specifically about HITS, since I know from reading the big post that they had up that a few COTHers had horses there.

I had not heard about the Thermal horse - thanks. As you note, a lot of us here in the Southwest go to Thermal or board in barns that do.

OT, but there is a major outbreak of neurological EVH-1 going in in the UK right now. First locus was the Beaufort Hunt, whose stables are located AT Badminton. Hunt horses spread the disease to other hunts, and now it may have jumped to a dressage barn. Gloucester is the epicenter.

Why do I raise this? Because the Badminton 4* event is the first week in May, and the event horses use the Badminton stables.

You’re welcome! I found out about the HITS Ocala incident on here; I didn’t even know that it was floating around. I had a show I was thinking about going to with a horse that I am currently training, and a bunch of horses were coming in from Florida that probably went to HITS/WEF. Not that i’m saying everyone has it, but I’d rather be safe than sorry given my horse isn’t vaccinated against EHV-1.

Yeah, I heard about that. It even made NPR news yesterday. I really hope that for the sake of everyone competing that some of the riders use their better judgement on deciding to go/or not to go to Badminton.

Its made its way up to Scotland already.

Wow … can’t believe how fast it’s moving. Recently, I had my horse vaccinated against it! I am so sorry for everyone affected!

Sammicat you cannot vaccinate against the neurologic form.

This is not entirely true. Some studies have shown that vaccination helps control the spread of EHM (neuro EHV-1) and may reduce the severity if caught. It is a good practice to vaccinate for EHV-1 every 3-4 months but people need to be realistic and know this is by no means “protection” – don’t expose your horses thinking it is going to be safe because they’ve been vaccinated. See http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh/ehv1_vaccination.cfm.

My experience is consistent with this – I’ve written before about my pony’s experience with neuro EHV-1. My barn was vaccinated, and none of the other horses got it despite extensive contact with her before her condition was identified. So even though my pony got EHV-1 vaccinated, I believe it is likely the vaccinations helped the other horses avoid it. Some horses are more susceptible. FWIW, I moved up my spring vaccine schedule this year due to the EHV-1 outbreak, so I am putting my money where my advice is.

Badminton has moved all the horses off its main property and has disinfected all its stables.

As to incoming horses in the FEI Security Barn, no one can control that except the riders. Badminton hosts the Grassroots Championships earlier in the week that draws horses from all over GB from amateur low level eventers.

From H&H

The pony left HITS Thermal on March 10 so that should have been before the WEF horses arrived to compete in the $1M GP. The GP was on March 17 and I think I remember reading that the WEF horses arrived at the beginning of the week of the GP. When I posted the info about the SB and SD horses on Facebook (via this site: http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_health/equine_herpes_virus.html) someone commented about another possible case that had also been at Thermal, but I haven’t heard more.

Thank you very much! I wasn’t aware of that, and I will need to speak with the vet to confirm. I did get the vaccinations required for HITS, so hopefully that will provide some protection.

It sounds like the UK outbreak is coincidental?

But isn’t there an eventing course at the WEF grounds or something? I vaguely remember hearing something about that…

[QUOTE=paw;6905581]

Actually it’s 2 horses affected who had been at Thermal:
The Welsh cross gelding in Santa Barbara County, and the stallion in San Diego.

"CDFA’s epidemiologic investigation indicates the Welsh Cross gelding and the Warmblood stallion both participated in the HITS event in Thermal, CA. The Welsh Cross gelding departed Permanent Barn 2 on March 10th and the Warmblood stallion departed Tent 29 on March 15th. Both confirmed positive horses have been quarantined and are under veterinary care. Potentially exposed horses to EHV-1 are recommended to be isolated and temperatures monitored twice daily for 14 days post potential exposure date. "

UK one is totally coincidental. It’s the neurological variant of the virus, while the WEF one is the “wild” strain. So the two outbreaks are unrelated.
