The Event at Kelly's Ford

Hi all,

I tried searching for this but couldn’t find any other recent threads. Does anyone know why both of the events at Kelly’s Ford have been cancelled for 2016? Or if they will reschedule? I remember seeing that these have been cancelled in the past due to some staffing changes but wasn’t sure if they will end up doing away completely with having events.

Just curious since it is close to me and I was hoping to make my return to eventing after almost 10 years there!

Thanks,
Katie

Interesting, after last year’s kerfuffle and the cancellation of their May event they did manage to hold two in 2015- July and Oct. Maybe the owners had a change of heart/ability to host the HT?

Hunt Club Farms, Virginia Horse Center and CDCTA are probably your next closest. Or in 2017 spring check out http://www.deeprunhuntclub.com/images/BR_pdf_uploads/PC_Horse_Trials_Prizelist.pdf I think it’s south of you.

Is Jim Moore still the trainer there?

No, he is now at Windy Meadow in Nokesville.

Thanks! I’ve seen Hubt Club advertised. I will like try to do Surefire or VAHT.

Also, I found out from an employee of KF that hosting events were too expensive and that’s why they’ve been cancelled. Seems weird considering all the money that’s invested over the past few years to create the cross country, IMO. Just thought I’d pass along.

what a shame. Their courses were gorgeous last year.

I have no idea why they’ve cancelled, but I do hope they start holding events again in the future … It’s a nice venue with good courses and I had a lot of fun the two times I went!

ETA: I just read above where it was posted that the owners felt the events were too expensive. I’m sure they get a much bigger financial return on investment compared to the amount of money and work put in from the H/J stuff … But I’m sure they put a lot of money into building those XC courses, too. Maybe the person that is managing it is just not personally invested into the eventing side of things?

That is my guess.

Does anyone know if they are keeping their xc course? They had some lovely jumps and it would be nice to school there.

It is possible that another event will take over their dates.

The H/J shows seem to be doing well, so as several said, that’s probably their emphasis at this point. My lesson barn took two trailer loads there this past Saturday.

I sure hope they keep up the cc course – even just for schooling. They have so many accommodations options for people, too (or at least they did in the recent past) that I always dreamed of staying a long weekend there and enjoying the facilities, especially the cc jumps.

I’d also love to see the Dalmatian Road Trials have enough entries to be held, and to be held at KF, again.

I was there this past Saturday to school xc. The course was in sad shape. Most of the course hadn’t been mowed and the grass was so tall you couldn’t find the jumps. You also have to call ahead to request water in the water jumps (they “don’t have time during horse show weeks” to make sure there is water in them either) In all honesty, it was a waste of the 30 dollar grounds fee.
whoever was the course designer for the jumper ring this past weekend also did a poor job. The courses were long and did nothing but encourage the bad running seen at the 2-2’6 level.
I’m pretty sure we, as an eventing community, can kiss Kelly’s Ford goodbye and will need to stick to WinGreen for schooling. I really hope I am wrong because I love the place, but it seems to be going downhill.

does anyone know if they are going to get rid of their xc jumps?

Well that’s a damn shame. The courses were lovely the couple times I was there. I know the H/J people need places to play too, but it seems like decent H/J venues are much easier to come by than XC courses.

I truly despise the terrifying running at fences you tend to see in the under-3’ jumper classes as well, but of course that is a whole 'nother can of worms!

I haven’t heard if they are selling them, but I have the name and number of the guy that built their jumps. He is very reasonably priced. PM me if you want his phone number. It might be worth a call…

Full Moon Farm is taking over their July date with a new recognized horse trial.

Unfortunately, word has it that Jim [edit] was either forced to quit or was fired, and is now in Nokesville. Because Jim was the one in charge of all things eventing at Kelly’s Ford, the fate of the trials and cross county course is in question. It’s a shame, because I really loved to event there and I always thought Jim did a marvelous job.

It is a shame.

The only legal action resulting from said “accusation” is pointed back upon the owner of KF, who has recently passed away.

The landowner at Kelly’s Ford passed away and his widow recently informed USEA that she does not plan to continue holding the event. Full Moon Farm posted signs at Waredaca that they intend to hold a recognized event to replace the Kelly’s Ford July date (which the Area has approved). They are working to pull together officials and volunteers, and there will be a formal announcement once they do.

It’s a great benefit to Area riders to have Full Moon step up on such short notice so riders don’t lose the chance to compete and to qualify for AECs. Please consider supporting them!
