The four fold stock tie- the finer points?

I know how to tie a stock tie, but mine somehow always come out looking wimpy compared to those “in the know”. With a four fold, could someone walk me through the fluffing part? Or is there some alternate technique other than basic knot, cross and pin? Do you keep the tie folded throughout, or unfold the ends at some point?

I’ve searched videos and they all show those dinky shaped ties. What am I missing???

Thanks in advance!

After knotting unfold the ends halfway before crossing and pinning. I pull the knot apart a bit and unfold the center and spread it out to get a puffier knot.

There is a difference in how you should lay the 4 fold before pinning it. The hunt servant would leave it flat, fold the two ends across each other below the knot, and pin. Toffs do it differently. One end of the 4 fold is pulled upwards out of the knot (under wearers chin) and spread out (a la cravat) before pinning down. https://youtu.be/0jYdTuB-YHo
Nowadays what most people seem to do is open out the first fold as it comes out of the knot, poof it, cross one side loosely over the other and pin.
Just make sure you use safety pins under your jacket.

Related question: What are the dimensions of a four-fold stock? I have a shaped one, but want a proper four-fold and I’m a good seamstress, so should be able to whip one out. thanks!

I have several and the sizes vary, but not by that much. 62"- 65" x 9"-10". All you have to do is roll the edges.
