The Jog

Does anyone know what the rules for the jog are at a CDI type event? Can someone else jog your horse for you? Also, must you use the reins on the bridle, or can you use a lunge line? I have never read about horses escaping the jog and running all over the show grounds, but I can see it happening…(this triggered by reading about the WC jog today)

I hate the FEI rule book So hard to navigate. I double checked because it has been a very long time since I looked at it ( was CDI secretary before) the rules are in the Veteriary section , not dressage

horse must wear a bridle, all it says. Stallions cannot be managed by Juniors.

horse must be presented by the rider in Dressage division unless a dispensation by Pres of the Ground Jury. If you need a groom to jog the horse, best contact the show management and have them contact the TD about getting permission ahead of time. Dont leave it until you arrive. The TD and the FEI Vet should be able to provide full info.

Nothing said about reins with the bridle, which I guess is why the Danish rider had a lunge line. (Pictures on Dressage News)

While you are required to use a bridle, it’s not completely clear whether you have to have reins or whether you can use a shank attached to the bit. (I wouldn’t recommend using lunge line personally even if they allow it, just a long-ish chain shank wrapped through the bit rings-- that’s how we sometimes show unpredictable babies in hand so that if they get loose they can’t step through the reins). I would definitely ask this in advance too.

Very interesting! Thanks to both of you.

I have to look up the rules for showing in hand to see if you are required to use reins there or if a lunge line would be ok. I am curious about that too. It seems it would be safer all around if you could use a lunge line.

Interesting!

How would a lunge line be safer? If you’re going to let the horse go, having a horse in a group of other horses attached by a long line to get wrapped up in or around other people/things seems like a worse idea.

You are only required to jog your own horse for major events.

You do not need to use the reins, you can use a lead. The vets aren’t looking to see if you have a lunge line in your hand, but I also wouldn’t let the line be any longer than a regular lead rope

I would think a lunge line would be way too long to effectively manage when showing in hand such as for the jog. I think the Arabian people use a 10 foot lead designed for in hand showing, so perhaps something like that would be better suited for folks that don’t want to use reins for the jog.

You can show in hand with reins or a shank. I think a lunge line is not expressly prohibited, but I’ve only seen it once and the eventual conclusion of that situation was the judge requiring the horse to be held by one of the pro handlers while in the ring.

Did you really see that happening. Well that’s interesting.

Horses can get wacky in the jog. You’ve all seen the still shots of horse kites.

That said, my experience at CSIs is that more horses get loose while lunging or during bridling/unbridling or from the stall than during the jog 🤷
