the last hunt!

Well, today we had our last hunt of the season. I almost didn’t go.

last night, I had just confirmed with a friend that she could ride my mare. About a half hour later, the BM called to let me know that my gelding came in missing a front shoe. Grr. too late to get the farrier.

I decided to go, usually missing a shoe doesn’t bother him. I did worry that if there was too much ice that it would make him sore, so I would play it safe. We didn’t have any hill toppers, and after a few members offered me to be up with the FM, I let them know I was going to hang in the back just to make sure the missing shoe wasn’t going to be a problem.

First run was short for me since a guest fell off his horse on the first jump in front of me. I stayed back with him and a member with colors who became FM of our liitle troupe. we took it easy to the next field. once we realized he pulled his groin (poor guy) and just wanted to stay at a walk, and we had caught up at the second check, she sent me on with the first flight and both assured me they were fine.

The footing was great, it had snowed a couple more inches last night, but was abover 30 degrees. while we had reports of ice, it had melted once we were out there. We still kept the speed pretty slow and my guy, was being the gentleman and quietly cantering along in the back. I did not even noticed he was missing the front shoe. He really wanted to go, but was happy to be where he was.

With missing the first part of the hunt, I was able to get in another 1.5 hours of first flight. So it was a good day! Wish there were more left, but will have to wait til next season.

Way to go with the boy, gettin’ the day done with no harm done to his pedicure! Where do you live that they cut off hunting at the end of Feb??? There would be a coup d’état if they tried that here!! :sleepy:

We went out today, prolly only the 5th time since New Years and man, us old coots had CABIN FEVER in the biggest way, it took some heaping gulps of port to get us focused! :stuck_out_tongue: The hounds came out lookin for coyote and worked very well for just under 3 hours. In the peanut gallery we were kinda thankful the pace didn’t get too fast because it became greasey footing about an hour into the hunt. One gal lost both front shoes on her clydesdale gelding, just keeping up with bigbabyTB!!!

Our weather is forecast to be perfect between now and Weds, our next hunt!! And we’ll hunt right up until the first of April then have to call it a season, a short one for sure!!

And of course we had re-caps of the Hunt Ball last weekend…I’ve sworn so many people to SILENCE (bribed others) it will be like silent prayer for a loooonnnggg time!! :D:eek:

Oh, I’m pretty sure the reason our hunts end around now is due to a three letter word MUD.

We rarely have snow and Ice on the ground at then end of february, it usually has all melted. But then it’s Muddy MArch. Ugh, so I’m pretty sure the years of experience that our MFH realized that it just isn’t going to happen with thick nasty stucky mud.

heck, with the slight thaw that we had friday was enough to suck the shoes off a few horses at our barn. ok, so the farrier is due in a week, but UGH.

So, since we rarely win over the mud season, the hunt season ended ; i’m gonna pull shoes for the next 6 weeks just so i don’t have to go shoe hunting.
