The Latest News on the Deadly Hendra Virus

There is new information about the use of monoclonal antibodies being used to protect people from Hendra. Apparently, it is very effective. The article doesn’t say whether or not the antibodies can be used on horses, too, but there is a vaccine. I would imagine all the Australians on this forum are familiar with the virus and have vaccinated their horses.

This article, as well as one in the New York Times, both express scientists’ concerns that climate change may promote Hendra infections as bats are forced to move from their normal habitats into areas more populated by people and livestock.

Yes. I feel bad because I really like the flying fox bats. I think they are cute. I will admit that I have been greatly swayed to this attraction from Janet Canon’s beautiful children’s book, Stellaluna.
