A friend of mine has a horse with nerve damage due to an old fence injury on her hind cannon bone and she does that high step motion on and off. Often when the footing changes ie. goes from concrete in the barn to grass outside or vice versa. So while your horse may not have the damage that this horse has I would definitely think its possible there were nerves impacted and she might just be recovering now!
