The purr and phone technology

IMO, a cat’s purr isn’t truly great until you can hear it on the phone.

In my family we have this tradition. We can hate each other. We can live 3,000 miles apart. And then the cat saves the day!

Mid obligatory phone conversation either side can say, “Oh wait… listen to this.” Then the phone is held up to the purring cat.

After that, we talk about best technique for getting the sound of that purr on the phone. (One also must leave the phone on the cat for longer than you’d think… it takes time for the listener to adjust her ears to hear the purr rather than talk.) The cat is admired as well. Or the purr and petter’s technique are critiqued. Helpful suggestions for improvement are made. The price differential between a cat with a little purr and a big purr is discussed.

Are we the only ones?

Nope, you’re not. In my particular circle, it’s more my friends and I who compare cat purrs, and dog snuffles, as well. I always get a charge out of one friend who will tell her dog that it’s “Auntie Louise” on the phone. That dog thinks I’m quite OK, and always gets very excited.

The purr is worthy of contemplation as one of zoology’s greatest mysteries

I often have teleconferences with our Sales reps, who are often located in their home office. Most have barking dogs in the background which pisses me off. One in particular has several cats, I always hear one or two kitty voices in the background. If I am having a bad day at work, I will make him hold one up to the phone to hear a purr. Nothing makes the day go better than hearing a purr, whether in person or over the phone!

My kitteh Oliver has an almost inaudible purr. Most of the time I have to put my hand on him to ascertain that he’s purring.

Thanks for that!

I have waited a long time to hear a big cat’s purr. The cheetah’s is a total helicopter, eh?

ETA: And just last night I was talking to my momma, and I told her about that most excellent article. I e-mailed it to her so that we could share the joy.

Thank you again for posting it.
