The Riddler?

Has anyone heard of and Oldenburg stallion named The Riddler? He was by Zeus. I have a mare by him.

If he’s the one that belonged to the Pirtles, then I remember him showing in the jumpers in the late 90s and early 00s-very attractive and talented. Mostly what I remember about him is that he had scars from biting his sides. If I’m thinking of the same stallion-bright chesntut? Maybe with a little white?

Wow, blast from the past! Yes, I remember the Riddler and yes he was owned by the Pirtles (or Portelas, depending on whether dad owned him or Daryl/Chimmy did). He was a chestnut with some white and the three babies I saw out in Top Brass’ field were carbon copies of dad with more splashy white.

He was a talented horse but he might have had strong opinions about the water which I think was his only real limitation as a show jumper (and a big one when your base is Palm Beach). I do seem to recall that both Top Brass and JET (Jimmy rode him) invested in building some water jumps in the jump field about that time. Sadly familiarity didn’t seem to help.

Must be the one- she is very light chestnut with some white. Deathly afraid of water, luckily we are doing dressage…

Anyone see any of his offspring in competition?

My friend breed her registered paint mare to the Riddler years ago. Killian is now around 14. Charlotte had showed him in A rated shows and done fantastic with him. I am now starting to ride and progress and I hope to show him some as well. In fact he was given to me as a wedding gift but we both kinda share him for the moment since I am a newlywed military wife. I didn’t want to move Killian to PA right before winter. A FL to PA move would have been quite a shock. My profile pic is a pic of him and on during my engagement shoot. Killian is a definite in your pocket horse and very athletic. He did inherit his dad’s water anxiety but we were able to overcome it.

Anyone have pics of the Riddler or know where I can find some? I have looked almost everywhere online. People keep saying my gelding looks very similar to him, and he happens to also not like the water jumps in the jumper arena  I do not know my geldings breeding(other than he is oldenburg x) but its worth a try seeing if they are similar at all

How can fear of water be genetic?

That’s really interesting. That horse did have a serious water issue. I have no idea how that can be genetic, but I’ve also heard of offspring of a certain sire all being funny about horses coming at them, which is another thing that would seem odd to inherit. So much we don’t know. I suppose it could be some attitude similarity that makes them likely to react to the same situation in similar ways, but it’s interesting to think about.

Lack of bravery/ spookiness along with a stubborn streak is probably something that can be inherited.

Now it makes me want to ask if the Judgement offspring jump the water.
