The stories of the “unhorsed” life beyond ownership!

I’m so sorry to hear about Braam’s death! It must be a terrible loss. I’ve followed your adventures and enjoyed them. You should think about carrying on after you’ve had a chance to sit with Braam’s death for a while.

I’m sure Braam is crossing bridges, cantering cones, and making friends wherever he is now.

I am so so sorry for you and Braam’s people. I too enjoyed hearing of your progress on him, and what a pro he was. Not to mention absolutely beautiful. Godspeed Braam.

Oh no! I am so sorry for all involved in Bram’s life-- he seemed to be an amazing horse. Hugs to you, KBC. But…take what he taught you, the confidence he gave you and run with it! He’s watching to see you fly with another fantastic horse.

^^^^ This.

My condolences.

The weekend we lost Braam, I had been on a high showing Munzy, in his first ever WE show. We were 3rd in dressage, with a respectable 63.33%, I lost him some marks with my geometry, we both lost marks arguing over his back up…and need to do a lot of 1/4 line work, to try and stop his tendency to try and hug the rail. Also came 3rd in EOH, all my issues, stooped to close to the switch cup, so had to move him to reach to move it, Backed him into the gate, and then trotted into the rounding poles, because, well that’s what I do at second level, and it’s not required, or desired at first. But overall we were third, and the two who were ahead of us were both told to move up a level, sooner rather than later. I turned out to be photographer for the day, suprised my self with some good shots, but not many of me and Munzy out there.

Oh my! Munzy is gorgeous. Photos are wonderful. Again I am in awe of what the WE riders and horses can do. I love that horses allow anyone to access sport regardless of age, infirmities, or experience. Thanks for sharing.

That’s why I really love WE, so it’s one discipline where everyone competes on a level playing field.

Life has been up and down since losing Braam, rode Munsy in a drill ride practice, where he got glared at by the mare we were partnering the whole time. My first time doing anything like that, and it was surprising fun. Then we went for a trail ride, which started off easy enough, but then we were in the scrub, always fun when you are on the tallest horse.

Then Munzy got kicked in the field and I was grounded again.

So I got to ride this big guy, Nico, no idea how tall he is, will have to stick him, but the weight tape would not reach around him! Got pushed well out of my comfort zone, by being taken out to move cows on him, but I survived!

I forget where you ride (did you ever really say?) but wherever it is, they sure seem to have a lot of good looking, BIG, safe horses.

Your adventures always make me smile!! I’ll tell you what, you are braver than me at this point in life. I am not at all comfortable taking my steady hunter mare outside on the trails-- she’s nearly 17 hands, is scared of cattle, and definitely not a fan of ‘new things in the bushes’. I admire your gumption, take life as it comes attitude. I truly believe that good things happen to good people and you seem to prove that. Keep on riding, KBC and keep on posting your rides. I always check your thread and smile like crazy at your photos.

Aww thank you, I’ve probably shared this tattoo before

It’s one of my trainers favourite sayings, and I have adopted it, and try to live by it…

And going forward, I have to honor the gifts that Braam gave me, by using them as long as I can.

It seems when I wasn’t watching Braam and I became poster children for WE here, kind of bitter sweet.

Awww.

On Saturday I went to my friends ranch for a trail ride, you know, that thing, way out of my comfort zone? I got to ride Jet, my favourite buddy, and we had a wonderful time. Although he isn’t the fastest, being a touch over 16hh and having long legs makes his walk just so nice, and seeing it was so hot, walk was all we did. Walked out, checked the cows, were going to play around and cut some out, just for fun, but J, who was the least experienced of the group was having a little trouble with her borrowed mount, who turned from switched off, to level 10 when he saw the cows, so we retreated in civilized order.

We then headed out to ride out through the bush, but the mosquito hordes were attacking in style, so we decided to head back to base. Big learning of the day, when your host offers you the chance to swap out the barrel reins on the headstall you are using, TAKE UP THE OFFER, for a person who rode English for so many years and can’t believe how averse I am to loop reins these days

There was times out on the ride that Jet and I were way behind the lead group, and way in front of the stragglers, so I could hear quiet chatter and laughing, but nothing else, it was a peaceful moment that recharged my soul.
