The Story of Cats on PBS/Second Half Tonite at 8 PM

Heads up about this program for all of us cat lovers. It’s about more than domestic cats, but looks like it will examine the origin and specialization of all cats. It’s a two part series on PBS, Wed., Nov. 2 & 9 at 8 PM on Nature, unless your local PBS station is broadcasting it at a different time. Looks like it could be good.
The Story of Cats

Looks interesting! I will check my local PBS channels to see if they are showing it then. Thanks for the notice!

Yep – just checked – it will be on here 8pm Wed. Yay!

Watching this now. I am a big PBS fan .once again, beautifully filmed.

I enjoyed it. Learned some things about the origins of cats that I never knew. And, the photography! Can’t wait until next Wednesday, to see the second half.

Interestingly, my Rachael cat hardly took her eyes off of the screen the entire time, and she’s usually not interested in tv. My other two, however, slept through it.

Hehe, I read that not as “Story of Cats” on PBS, but “Story of Cats on PBS.”

And I thought, “Yeah, cats are such straight, white, left-leaning, smart/wannabe smart people. Of course they are involve with PBS. I wonder if they are already part of the Sustaining Circle with contributions all rigged up to come directly out of their checking accounts. That’s so simple and easy; a cat would like that way of paying a recurring bill. Or do cats feel guilty but do nothing during pledge drives?”

mvp –

I enjoyed the program but was amused by the theory that cats originally lived (mostly) in trees. It’s like now there is a new idea that cats descended from apes too? OK, so, all life began in the ocean, then moved to the trees, completely bypassing earth (which was here before trees were), then came down to earth in search of larger prey? And, unlike human life, which “science” now theorizes originated in Africa, feline life originated in Asia? These sorts of theories amuse me when they are presented as facts.

However, the cloud leopards and the Pallas’s cat are beautiful. I had never heard of those two before and was surprised the narrator did not bother to spell “Pallas.” One might have thought, seeing those magnificent mountains and caves, that it is spelled “Palace’s” cat.

It was named for the naturalist who first described it, not for Pallas Athena, whose companion it presumably never was said to have been.

HA!, totally thought is was “palace” cat. Was planning to google today. SUPER cool cat btw - he looked like a cross between a cat and a monkey

I noticed the captions don’t seem to be working right for the full episode. Is anyone else having this problem?

Holy crap, that animal would rule the world.

If you dig deep enough, I’ll bet you’d find a single cat-monkey (or a small handful of them) behind the mortgage derivatives and the junk mortgage bonds. I mean, they’d be drinking and saying “Yanno, here’s how stupid things are. I’ll bet we could collect a bunch of crap together and sell it somewhere as a new thing. No, seriously. Human beings are That Stupid.”

The combination of monkey cleverness (and opposable thumbs for typing) and the cat’s autonomous, “Hey man, everyone is looking out for themselves; my willingness to screw you in a deal isn’t personal. It’s how you play too”… that combination is dangerous.

Second half tonight at 8 PM

I liked the second half even more than the first half. But I wish they’d shown more normal housecats instead of those especially-developed breeds. More cats like more people have. Maybe half exotics and half ordinary house cats.

Thanks, Louise!

We watched it last night, I think we missed the first night - loved it.

I am so happy whenever I see cats portrayed in a positive light!!
