Forgetting the logistical challenges for a moment, let’s look ahead to the exciting days of WEG competition that are only a few weeks away! Who is on your individual cheer list and what stars are on your won’t miss list?
For me, it’s show jumping and I’m refusing to listen to the negative nellies claiming the pool is weaker this year. While Canada and Britain haven’t released their final lists, it’s a good bet that we’ll have 80% of the world’s top 20 riders competing (more if Beezie rides). If Eric competes, we’ll see the entire top 5, including Mclain at number 5 who has had a great summer with Clinta.
Our other riders are up there as well and earned their spots by competing well at recent international competitions: Laura ranked 31 and Devin at 34 (yes, his past…). As expected, the rest of the competing team riders are comprised of riders from the top 100 list. No, not every show jumping superstar will be there, but then again, is there a competition when they all show up?
I’m looking forward to several stars in addition to team USA: #1 Harrie and Emerald, Marchus and Pret a Tout, Martin and Clooney 51, Nicola and H&M Chilli Willi, and William and Billy Buckingham. Will Luciana Diniz be there with Fit for Fun? If so, add her to the list.
This year’s WEG will be a thrilling mix of long-standing names and talented fresh faces. The fresh faces don’t bother me too much - I can’t help but remember our own Greg Best and Gem Twist at the Olympics. We have 2 well-mounted veterans, a rider on a phenom grey riding a hot streak, and a talented young rider on a freakishly talented mare. I’ll be proud to cheer for team USA with an extra cheer for Laura and Mclain!
