Lovely horses and amazing big rig driving skills!
Who cares!
Fork over the pictures!
just as strange, we were stopped by the Wells Fargo dudes they wanted to buy our matched set of Morgan bays (they were sisters) … ugh no
Does your barn typically do layovers?
WOW! That’s a lot of rig to park! I always thought their horses were straight up QH- that’s a very interesting cross if it is with Oldenburg.
I work for Wells Fargo and always volunteer to help with the stage coach/horses. The rigs they have are awesome!! The horses they use are mostly quarter horses/crosses but we do have a team of ottbs. We have used warmbloods but mainly when we are over seas and borrow the horses.
We do layovers occasionally but people always call before hand to set it up, they don’t just roll up out of the blue. That’s the part that was so perplexing to me.
That’d be a really cool rig to pull in my driveway and if I had stalls and hay to sell, I’d be happy to do so. Who knows the circumstances-- maybe they had a layup planned a few hours away but the schedule got hosed. Someone referred them to your barn, and the fact is that you did have stalls, right? So the whole “prior reservation” issue seems like just a protocol violation and not a genuine harm caused. Regardless you could have just said no, but you said yes and took their money. The problem is…?
All these years, and I never even knew Wells Fargo still had horses!
When I was a child, Tales of Wells Fargo was one of my favorite TV programs.
I really want to see the Priefert Percherons.

Dale Robertson hosted that one…man I feel old…
For the OP, if you are listed as a layover, that does happen when plans fall apart. Sometimes the travelers that show up unannounced aren’t as cool as this outfit…or as obviously able to pay for obviously healthy horses.
That’s cool! And weird.
My only concern would be quarantine?! Presumably they are travelling all over - I am sure they are well looked after but would be a little concerned that they could bring something on to the property?! Or on the flip side it could be a danger THEIR string - showing up at a random property with no info about care practices, outbreaks etc (NOT pointing fingers at OP at all - just the general concept of showing up at a random barn with no information/planning).
I don’t know all that much about bio security but it just seems odd.
toady if you’ve ever taken a horse to a show, a clinic, a trail ride, a poker ride, etc etc then quarantine goes out the window.
Maybe they were told you accept drop-ins?
I agree, with todays cell phones, you think at least they would have had the courtesy to let you know they were coming, so you could prepare whatever stalls they needed.
Here, commercial haulers that have a contract with a layover barn still call ahead with a time and again when they are getting close, so you can be there and ready for them.
No good to just show up and gates be closed and locked and no one there.
Kind of puzzling to just drop in like that.

did you see the part where they were holding a show that day? and they were lucky it arrived late enough that handling a 18 wheeler was doable?
I’m sorry, but barns aren’t Holiday Inns- and even if they were- what if they didn’t have stalls available? What if the barn was under an EIA or other quarantine? It doesn’t strike you as a LITTLE odd that they just rolled up??

I like the Wells Fargo guys, but Jason and the “Priefert Percherons” (no longer Priefert… Now Percheron Thunder. It was too expensive for Priefert to keep sponsored) are absolute class acts. He and his wife are great horse people are SO genuine and funny. They put up with all our antics (ie… letting their young percherons become pick up horses for the night :D). They are some of my favorite people to travel with. I’m always happy when we are with them at Rodeos. Since moving to Texas, I’m sad I don’t get to be around them more often. We have fun!
How does a short pick-up man get on a Percheron?
Being a bull horse is very terrifying! So is Juan Carlos…
The two best friends that anyone could have.
Did I mention we have fun?
Not trying to say that it should be their standard practice. But the barn did have room, wasn’t under quarantine, did have hay to sell, and I presume they paid th barn appropriately.
It wasn’t actually a problem, in any way. Worked out just fine, actually.

I would be flattered, not “ugh.” Why is it strange that they would ask about a pair of matched horses when they have a matched team? Presumably your pair were already broke to drive.

They were at the Pfizer Fantasia at Equine Affaire in Mass. a number of years ago. It was an 8 horse hitch, and I still remember how impressive they were. The show is in an old hockey rink that has a couple of people size doors on the perimeter, and they backed them up right smack dab in the middle. I hope you do get a chance to see them someday.
