The Whippet won Best in Show at the National Dog Show! :)

WooHOO!

For all the Whippet aficionados among us (myself included) :congratulatory: :tickled_pink:

He’s a beauty - lovely big dark eyes, though he did seem to have trouble putting on his “pretty ears”; apparently the judge was willing to overlook this!

‘WHISKEY’ ~ wonderful dog !

I love the NDS and Whippets are definitely a favorite breed. I’ve never owned one, but have met quite a few and I think they are just wonderful dogs.

Wonderful dog and what a face! As a corgi owner, I was proud to see the short ones do so well in the herding group.

Beautiful dog. Maybe I’m looking at too many sporting dogs lately but that is the fattest Whippet I have ever seen. Edit, maybe I mean flabby.

I don’t see any fat or flab in his BIS pic. Just muscle and deep chest. He doesn’t look as snaky-lean as some Whippets I’ve seen, but I’ve seen very few other than on TV.

He is a solid dog.

There are lot of variations in body type among Whippets; some are very lean and ribby and you can see every spinous process - others are more muscular. My two were the more muscular types, the male was longer and leaner than the female - but they both had defined glutes and hamstrings and big shoulder muscles. My female takes after her mother, who though she (the mother) competed at Westminster, always had to watch her weight and tended to be (ahem) plump. If I don’t run Callie every day and feed her sparingly, she tends to gain weight pretty easily.

I have a friend with a Whippet who is more of an ectomorph, she makes my Callie look like a bodybuilder, LOL! Very petite, narrow head, tucked up and all ribs visible – though she is in good health. For showing, the breed standard wants them on the lean side, you are supposed to be able to easily see the top three spinous processes or they are considered to be “too heavy.”

Most laypeople think Whippets (and most Sighthounds) are way too skinny, and often comment on it, accusing their owners of starving them. A truly chubby Sighthound is NOT a healthy dog.

Their body type is definitely different from most dogs you see, but often people compare everything to a Lab, so…

(And a majority of Labs I see living in suburbia are significantly overweight! Oy.)

That’s interesting, I didn’t know. I suppose I’ve only seen the leaner type, not that I have seen that many. Whippets are an unusual and beautiful breed.

Agreed regarding the labs, and really most suburbian dogs. I had the pleasure of seeing a sporting-dog Lab this week that was in incredible condition. You could see the muscle definition through this dogs coat at 20 paces and maybe even the shadow of a rib or two. The dog was ripped. That is also unusual, and beautiful.

My couch potato whippet.

Yeah that dog is definitely not fat. Solid yes. And its reasonable to.think that show bred dogs and race bred dogs are of somewhat different brreding lines. Different priorities.

I was just soooooo tickled to see a Lhasa make the cut.

I’ve already had 4 people contact me in the last 3 days wanting to know if I have any whippets available or know someone who does. That’s crazy. Luckily people have a short attention span, so they’ll be off to another breed soon.

@snowblaze - are you a breeder? You nailed it; as soon as things die down they will move on to another breed.

Whippets are lovely, wonderful dogs - and pretty hard to come by since they’re relatively rare and most are spoken for; though there are a few rescue groups. I got my first Whippet from Timbreblue near Charlottesville and my second from a private breeder (the one with the bitch who competed at Westminster); it was her “bucket list wish” to have one litter from Honey. She is actually a Newfie breeder - their house is hilarious with those two breeds sharing it - talk about contrasts!

That reminds me of the sudden popularity of various breeds (Dalmations, Huskies, Malinois) after movies came out featuring them. Ugh. Of course the above dogs are all more complicated than Whippets and probably not for most people.

I adore my Whippet; she is the sweetest, most gentle and loving dog I’ve ever known - her temperament is exceptional. Very cuddly, but never rude about it (Whippets have a dignity and a catlike cleanliness, while still being incredible athletes and like “living sculpture” around the house), though as puppies they can be pretty obnoxious. :stuck_out_tongue:

I found this clip of Whiskey on my Whippet FB Group:

I am smitten with Whiskey!! So happy for his breeder/handler Justin Smithey!!! Thrilled this breed never caught on but honestly speaking, a reputable breeder is VERY careful about the placement of their pups… As a life long Whippet owner I know this to be certain. GO WHISKEY!

I am an infrequent breeder, and don’t have another litter in the works for at least a couple years. Whippets are sleek, clean, quiet, sweet, and are awesome athletes. Right now both of my younger whippets are in agility training and I’m showing one of them in conformation.

I was listening to an interview with Bo Bengsten, a very long time whippet breeder, and he said, “Having a whippet puppy in the house is a little like having a live squirrel in the house.”

I’d have to agree with him there, but once they become mature, they are perfect. Whippets are the only breed I want.

My high school mascot was a Whippet.

Most days on my way home from work I see a woman walking a group of 4 whippets. This time of year they all have on jackets.
