Thin Soles, or....? Input appreciated!

Well I jinxed myself and my mare is cripple lame:(

I did her allergy shots on 3/30, which she’s been reacting to more. Went to ride on the 31st and she was lame LF walking once I got on her. I attributed it to a sore neck from the shots…talked to vet, gave a dose of banamine and a few days off. Rode her a few days later…she felt sound, but tight. Next day mildly lame - sent video to vet and she thought RF (meanwhile I start to panic that she reinjured whatever soft tissue injury we had last summer). I was also doubting that the first day lameness was the LF…even though I am usually 100% accurate figuring out lameness when riding. Per vet gave another dose of banamine. Sound for 4 days…then cripple lame on the LF.

Now we suspect abscess…but she is in full pads with a pour in! Vet comes out to xray…pull shoe. xrays good…no sign of abscess or other issues. Vet advises not to soak, thinking maybe due to something else and recommends some shoe changes. Farrier comes out in 3 days…mare is very lame, was doing bute 2x day and switched to banamine per vet instructions. Farrier finds a point specific tender spot…so again, back to abscess theory. Also finds a possible abscess area on the RF (now we know why it switched). Put shoe back on with a rim/heel support pad, but not full pads so we can soak.

Been soaking 3 days and she’s getting more lame…can hardly weight bear without banamine on board…is still quite lame with banamine.

Please just help reassure me that this abscess is going to come out soon! Poor girl is sick of me giving her meds and wrapping her foot (doing epsom salt gel with animalintex pads soaked in hot water and a diaper. I just feel so bad for her with being so lame for a full week.

I’ve had good luck with the vetricyn soaking stuff. I have a soaking boot, so I mix up a gallon of the vetricyn stuff in an old jug and it will last 2 soaks.

How frustrating. Jingles for you and your girl.

Question, have you ultrasounded the feet? It might just be from reading making them seem more common but with getting abscesses with the shoe set up I would almost suspect something else causing them. When my late horse had mild rotation a piece broke off and it caused chronic abscesses but many things can cause it. Angles can also play a huge part in soundness. She might have a certain way she’s more comfortable with so tracking pictures of her feet along with the days she seems sound or seems to be more comfortable might be worth the time it would take

Well, she went out this morning very lame but a slight bit better than yesterday, but she seemed a bit brighter eyed/less cranky. She came in almost sound!

Took off the diaper/soak…big bulge and a hole/nasty area dead center on the coronary band in the front. That wasn’t there this morning…I pushed around on it and ewww, it stinks too. So I am feeling so much better that it is an abscess that took it’s good old time coming out of the top. Poor girl!

Who else gets excited when we find a hole in our horses?

I had a similar experience. Luckily, it resolved a bit sooner than yours but I thought she had blown her whole leg up. She had massive stovepipe swelling from her foot clear up above the hock. She had been mildly lame with just a bit of swelling around the fetlock. I did take her to the vet and he thought she ‘sprained’ her fetlock. Gave us 3 days of bute and no work for a week. She improved with the 3 days of bute so I did not go out the next day. It was the next day I went out to find her nearly non-weight bearing and the massive swelling :flushed:. Soaked her leg in cold water and as I was palpating trying to find what she tore up, found nothing until I got to her her heel which was blazing hot…after 20 minutes soaking in cold well water. Then I was pretty sure I was dealing with an abcess and thankfully…yep, next day we had a hole in the coronary band…whohoo! She rapidly became sound but it took nearly 3 weeks for all that swelling to resolve.
