I recently got some cinnamon candy canes for Christmas.
Personally, I don’t like cinnamon candy canes, but I know that horses like normal candy canes.
I was wondering if I could feed a horse cinnamon candy canes?
Thanks
It shouldn’t be harmful. You’d just have to see if they like them.
Man, my old man has gone trash diving more than once, thanks to his ability to open any gate. Consumed items included: half a big mac, french fries, unknown amount of paper that smelled like food, beef jerky, doritos… the list continues. His favorite treat is skittles, which he will beg like he’s never been fed in his whole life if you open a pack. He also loves black coffee, and beer.
They’ll be fine, just don’t feed them 2 pounds of the stuff. Your luck, they won’t like them either and they’ll go in the trash.
I gave my horse a peppermint candy cane once… He was sure I was trying to poison him!
LOL my TB mare would have broken down her stall door for a peppermint candy cane. Not sure how she feels about cinnamon…but you never know until you try.
The amount of cinnamon (probably cinnamon oil) in a candy cane won’t harm a horse.
Whether or not your horse will eat them is moot.
Reading here that horses eat bananas, I tried on my 3.
Resounding ICK! from all 3.
Dry pasta (any shape), OTOH, NomNom!
Go.
Figure.
My main ride is very fond of cheddar goldfish crackers. And green spearmints. I’ve never heard of a little bit of cinnamon candy hurting a horse. One barn acquaintance regularly has his snickers bar stolen by his horse, horse has been doing it for years with no problem.
Some horse treats come in a Cinnamon flavor, and I have fed them and not had a problem. I would think Cinnamon candy canes (or any other flavor) would probably be fine just like peppermint ones as long as the individual horse likes the flavor.
My mare LOVES bananas. I didnt actually plan to give her any, I was eating one and she was begging to try some. Decided it was the best thing ever. She also loves fruity pebbles and sweet tea. My gelding will try just about anything, he likes goldfish crackers too and always wants to steal my lemon gatorade.
My 29 going on 30 yr old mare goes nuts for CHICKEN NUGGETS! It is so weird! She has also been known to grab a burger or pizza out of your hand if you’re not paying attention. She’s worse than any dog I’ve known when it comes to “people” food.
She would for sure enjoy a cinnamon candy cane.
My guy loves the normal peppermint candy canes and the cherry ones- I just have to break them in half first or he’ll stare at me like I’m missing something
I knew a Morgan that loved sour treats. Warheads being his favorite.
Cinnamon candy canes should be fine.
I had a boy that loved them but I had to be careful how many because of the sugar overload!!
mine LOVES bread and oreos. go figure
We had a STBD race horse that loved pop rocks. And my appendix QH used to eat hot peppers from my sub. A horse liking cinnamon wouldn’t surprise me.
I wish the OP would come back and let us know if their horse liked them.
I am sure mine would eat those.
Mine also love bananas, bread, etc.
What I can not get them to eat, which people here say horses like, is celery.
Mine loves white bread, potato chips, donuts, and fruit roll-ups. He’s also a fan of diet Monster and the complete Crystal Light line. Interestingly, he hates bananas to the point of walking away from you if it’s offered to him. He’s also not a fan of chocolate, peanut butter, jam, cornbread, or carrot cake.
Grapes were a huge hit with the ponies I took care of at a petting farm. Some of them enjoyed swiss chard.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a horse liked cinnamon candy canes.
Thanks y’all for the replies.
I just wasn’t sure if cinnamon was on the harmful things list.
I tried it with my mare, and she LOVED IT.
I guess crappy Christmas gifts can come in handy.
I now have months worth of treats. 😃
Savin money!
Thanks Y’all!
Bananas, Fig Newtons, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cheerios, Sour Patch Kids, French fries. Not a fan of apple fritters, but he loves the glaze and will lick it off my hands.
He’ll eat just about anything. The only thing I’ve ever seen him turn his nose up at was Platinum Performance. Go figure 🤣
The BO had a wonderful appy gelding, world’s best therapy horse. He loved donuts and iced tea. He had all he could eat and drink on his last day.
The local grocery store had 4 carts of peppermint candy canes for 32 cents per box. I bought 10 and put them in a container so the riders could treat their horses at the end of their lessons. a nice change from apples and carrots. They must have thrown the rest of them away because they disappeared. i found 6 bags of Ghirardelli chocolate peppermint squares for $2.50 each but i’m not sharing them. My guy gets the candy canes.
