Thinking of getting a scooter for horse shows

Anyone got one? The Honda Ruckus’ are good and rugged looking, but a bit pricey, even used. The Honda Metropolitans are adorable with their retro look and much more reasonable. Curious what others have and how they’ve held up. It’s usually just me so a scooter would be more practical than a golf cart and take up less space.

I actually like this idea.
Can a scooter hold a basket?
Seems like that would be a plus, so ferrying small stuff could be done as well as zipping around a coursewalk
As long as Show Mgmt agreed to this form of transportation.

ETA: sorry, THIS is what I was thinking when you said “scooter”
The larger Honda would be a NO for me
Golf carts are bad enough, why add another motorized/noisy vehicle to showgrounds?
(& yes, I know there are electric golfcarts)

Personally, I was considering getting a bicycle as my Driving Obstacles courses are a whole lot bigger than any course of jumps < think 1/2h to walk them

I had a Metropolitan during my horse show mom days. Loved it.

I hear ya!
My aging knees doth protest quite loudly at all the walking - add in up & downhill & I am toast.
I have been known to beg for rides from passing Drivers w/o shame.

Still. my bicycle or ‘lectric scooter will take up less space in my trailer
16’ stock that already has to hold my cart, harness, feed & all the Etc in the front, mini or horse in the back.

Dang!
Now I really want that scooter…

A 5 gallon bucket or a ring box fit on the floorboard on the Metropolitan. There is a nice storage space under the seat too. Now I’m wishing I still had mine. Thanks FCF

I have a Honda Metropolitan I take to horse shows. By and large I really like having it. That said, I will say it’s a bit of a pain though. It’s a lot heavier than you think it is. I thought I’d be able to put it in my dressing room of my trailer but that’s not feasible. Even if I could get it in with a ramp, there’s a big enough lip to get it out that I couldn’t lift it over and I’m really strong for a female. I have to keep it in the extra stall of my horse trailer. I also am not comfortable leaving it out at horse shows without a tack stall. There may be another way of securing it, but I’m worried it might drive off.

Added: If you don’t have a trailer with a ramp you’re going to need to get a fold up ramp.

You can add a basket too it. I’ve also used bungee cords to attach my muck cart to it so I don’t have to carry it. It’s redneck, but whatever. I find that there is not room under the feet for anything. I have a really long femur so turning it sharply is difficult and I have to put my foot down when I need to. I got mine off craigslist for a song so I won’t part with it, but for the amount of showing I go to it’s really excessive. In the winter I have to put a trickle charger on it it or it won’t start–the novelty is great, but the reality is kind of a bit much. A bike would have taken up less space and been easier to handle, and I would have been less worried about theft. So while I love it, I don’t know that I’d spend the money again. Now if/when I get a 2+1 trailer I’m going to get a golf cart, so clearly I’m not one for practical and I don’t learn my lesson easily.

At my shows everyone uses golf carts that way dogs can ride also

I love my Honda Metropolitan! It makes such a huge difference at the venues where there is no live scoring and the rings are a long way from the stalls. It really lowers my stress level to be able to check ring status quickly by scooter-ing on over.

The only downsides are:

  • We need to take 2 vehicles to the show, since my car needs to carry the scooter rack.
  • They are heavy…I can unload mine off the rack myself but need my husband to help load it onto the rack.

Overnight at the shows I either bike lock it to something, put it in the tack stall, or drive it up the ramp into our trailer and bike lock it in there.

I do have a 2+1 trailer with a center stall and side ramp, which is the only reason I’m contemplating getting one.
