This seems to be a good place to submit a trial “Judging Guidelines” that will be put into each class’s thread at close of judging, tomorrow or Wed. This is what I have been thinking of, but am (very) open to tweaking the guidelines, so I am asking for input:
General: ALL entries will be judged on the numeric system – from 60 [marginal for a ribbon at a real show] to a theoretical 100 [absolute perfection]. Merry has been kind enough to give an outline of how judges in the real world plan their scoring system. It is on page ___ in the original H.S. thread.
Two things to keep in mind:
-
It does not matter if your scores are higher or lower than others as long as you are consistent in your system. What will skew the results is if you panic when you see that others are giving out many 85’s and your high score for a class is a 78. Since scores will be averaged, as long as everyone keeps to their own system and is consistent, it matters not if you tend toward the high or low end of the group.
-
For your scores to count, you must judge every horse in a class. It is too hard for me to divide one entry’s score by 12 and another by 14 and another by 10, if people pick and choose who they want to give scores to. In the real world, judges must score every round, and so must our judges (you guys).
To keep from blowing smoke out of InfoPoop’s ears and melting the server down, please just record your judge’s card in the following format (in the thread for each class):
#1: 85
#2: 76
#3: 78
#4: 82
NO editorializing at this point. Re-hashing the show can take place later at peoples’ option.
May I suggest, since there will be a LOT of judging to do with all these wonderful entries, that people start with the Model, then do the flat classes and finally work their way through the jumping classes from lower fences to higher? That will enable me to start collating and averaging scores and pinning classes in a somewhat organized fashion. If you only want to judge some classes, that is fine, but please organize your judging within this framework, however you many classes choose to judge.
I had NO IDEA that the response would be this great and I am thrilled with the fun this BB can provide (THANK YOU, COTH!). Judging will be left open for long enough that everyone has a chance to participate if they want to. If you know someone who would like to judge but is unable to until a certain date, please email me privately and I will see what the outer limit of a reasonable cut off date is.
I might suggest that it will be more fun if you judge each class before looking at scores/ placings given by other people. That’s what judging is all about — getting different opinions from people.
Judging the jumper classes will have a specialized advisory section on how to look for a good potential jumper (Chanda and Kachoo — get your buns in gear, girls). You are welcome to follow this guideline or just go with your instincts. The guideline is for people who are lost and desire some framework within which to organize their placings.
----- End of Judging guideline— draft #1. Is it a tad long? (Don’t forget that attorneys get paid by the word…) Have I left things out? Anything unreasonable in there? Need feedback before Tuesday noon.
Thanks,
Pam
