This is one heckuva show!

I just counted (ballpark) and we have just under 300 entries so far!!! We will probably top out at 320 - 340 because I know that a number of people needed to use scanners at friend’s houses/offices today to get the pictures ready to post.

YEA!!!

At $2.00/ class, I am hoping that this means that we have raised over $600 for relief fund charities. Makes me (and should make all of you) feel good about this whole effort. Please do not ask me where to send donations – each person can donate to the charity of their choice. I am just happy that this show has taken off so well and I am hoping that judging will be as much fun as entering.

Stand by for judging guidelines starting tomorrow. In the meantime, please all do what Leah did, and double check your entries for numbering before judging starts so we do not end up with a bunch of duplicate numbers (I was the dupicate # in that case, so I have already given myself this little talk ). If you are a duplicate number, please add an “a” after your number if there are already higher numbers in the class. If you are still the bottom post, feel free to increase your entry number by one.

Also, anyone who feels that they have entered an incorrect class can delete that entry and re-enter another class before judging begins. Once judging begins, no changes can be made, or it will turn into a real mess.

Way to go, fellow BB’ers!!!

Way to go, Merry. I was sorta hoping that, if people are donating entry fees (to Safeway or where ever is accepting $$) they might “round up” a tad so that this show will generate even more than it might have otherwise. Hope you have entered all the classes you wanted to. I have yet to check on individual entries, so I cannot yet comment on the outrageously high scores I expect to be able to give you… )

Dern, I forgot about that pesky “schooling fee”… If I fall off again, do I still have to pay it?

Oh, but the nachos are great: stale tortilla chips topped with fake melted cheese! Yummy!

Just steer clear of the fish tacos!

I think that this “virtual horse show for charity” would make an excellent article for someone to write. I for one am so impressed with how the people on this board have found a way to help themselves get through the stress of this time (can you say “escapism”?) while also doing something positive at the same time.

Just a thought…

Yep Merry, we did have to include all the fees and expenses we would normally incur. Still, less than a real show.

This seems to be a good place to submit a trial “Judging Guidelines” that will be put into each class’s thread at close of judging, tomorrow or Wed. This is what I have been thinking of, but am (very) open to tweaking the guidelines, so I am asking for input:

General: ALL entries will be judged on the numeric system – from 60 [marginal for a ribbon at a real show] to a theoretical 100 [absolute perfection]. Merry has been kind enough to give an outline of how judges in the real world plan their scoring system. It is on page ___ in the original H.S. thread.

Two things to keep in mind:

  1. It does not matter if your scores are higher or lower than others as long as you are consistent in your system. What will skew the results is if you panic when you see that others are giving out many 85’s and your high score for a class is a 78. Since scores will be averaged, as long as everyone keeps to their own system and is consistent, it matters not if you tend toward the high or low end of the group.

  2. For your scores to count, you must judge every horse in a class. It is too hard for me to divide one entry’s score by 12 and another by 14 and another by 10, if people pick and choose who they want to give scores to. In the real world, judges must score every round, and so must our judges (you guys).

To keep from blowing smoke out of InfoPoop’s ears and melting the server down, please just record your judge’s card in the following format (in the thread for each class):

#1: 85
#2: 76
#3: 78
#4: 82

NO editorializing at this point. Re-hashing the show can take place later at peoples’ option.

May I suggest, since there will be a LOT of judging to do with all these wonderful entries, that people start with the Model, then do the flat classes and finally work their way through the jumping classes from lower fences to higher? That will enable me to start collating and averaging scores and pinning classes in a somewhat organized fashion. If you only want to judge some classes, that is fine, but please organize your judging within this framework, however you many classes choose to judge.

I had NO IDEA that the response would be this great and I am thrilled with the fun this BB can provide (THANK YOU, COTH!). Judging will be left open for long enough that everyone has a chance to participate if they want to. If you know someone who would like to judge but is unable to until a certain date, please email me privately and I will see what the outer limit of a reasonable cut off date is.

I might suggest that it will be more fun if you judge each class before looking at scores/ placings given by other people. That’s what judging is all about — getting different opinions from people.

Judging the jumper classes will have a specialized advisory section on how to look for a good potential jumper (Chanda and Kachoo — get your buns in gear, girls). You are welcome to follow this guideline or just go with your instincts. The guideline is for people who are lost and desire some framework within which to organize their placings.

----- End of Judging guideline— draft #1. Is it a tad long? (Don’t forget that attorneys get paid by the word…) Have I left things out? Anything unreasonable in there? Need feedback before Tuesday noon.

Thanks,

Pam

Bravo HSM, I really must return to the tasks for which I am paid, but this is an awful lot of fun.

I would think it would be worthy of some serious press. And of such a positive kind.

Pam, today is the first day I’ve looked at any threads not related to last week’s tragedy. I take my (approved) hunt cap off to you for your absolutely brilliant idea.

Just want to say kudos to Pam for organizing all of this.
Anyway, this show is going to cost me a small fortune. I didn’t scratch early enough so I got hit up for the stall adn the classes. Then I had to pay all of the office fees and stuff, add to that that in order to park my truck and run the “borrow from Marion store” I had to pay for a parking pass. Then I have an enormous bill at the tack shop. That runs it up to a pretty high bill. Oh well, the downfalls of showing. (made much better by the fact that it’s for a good cause)

Okay, I’ve judged eight classes. It’s time to find more sun screen and go for a potty break.

What a great, nay, inspired, idea!

I had thought I would enter but then pull out because of something like a stone bruise (my entry just an empty field)…my old boy was very good at that sort of minor injury just before one (most) of the (rare) shows/events we did. I am quite familiar with the idea of paying my entry fee but not getting to compete.(I am not superstitious but I got to the point where if someone started to talk about an upcoming show in front of him, I would grab his ears so he couldn’t hear…he always used to look at me with a “what have I missed?” look afterwards!).

I had thought I couldn’t enter because I haven’t got any pics, but then I remembered a cross country one which should give people a laugh

The Red Cross is an excellent choice and my fee will find its way there.

I don’t suppose there is room for novelty classes at this show, but perhaps at a later date? eg horse/pony with the roundest bottom, most like its owner, loveliest eyes…

can I be a sponsor? I just donated to the families of fallen firefighters/policemen, and I managed to talk my dad into giving blood (he’s O+, which is twice as good). Sorry I didn’t enter. I missed it!

Thanks for the suggestion! One place I write for, Gogallop.com, just asked me about possible charities they could promote. Perhaps they could put something similar together!Yet they don’t have Pam…

I am going to the Safeway and donating my entry fees through the Coinstar machine like Dublin did!!!

I billed myself for a couple of $5 schooling rounds and gave the end result to a Firemen’s Fund going directly to benefit the families of the missing firemen.

Have you thought about the logistics of judging though? Some of these big classes are going to take forever just to get through (or maybe my computer’s just slow? )

JR* I LOVE your Idea: How about – to be a sponsor of a class you agree to donate $2 x the number of entries in that class. That way, we can double our donations! (The Model will be expensive to sponsor, but some of the Pro classes or Adult medals will be cheaper. Each class can then be named after the horse of the sponsor’s choosing.

I will start by sponsoring the Pony Hunters in the name of my first pony, Apache. It shall heretofor be called the “Apache Pony Hunter Class”!

Any other takers to be a sponsor?

My entry fees have already been donated to the relief effort!

A great big ‘thank you’, Lord Helpus, for all the effort you have gone to as virtual horse show manager so far - you’re doing a GREAT job.

Hey - don’t forget grooming and coaching fees!

Great idea, Lord Helpus!!

I am in for a sponsorship. I will even go for the big one. I would proudly sponsor the Model Class.

All the money I have saved over the years not being spent at horse shows couldn’t go to a better cause. I will choose as my charity the Firemen’s Widow and Children’s Fund.

Oops a little edit here, It is actually called the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund.

I’m going to go check now on the entry count.

I have checked and as of now there are 50 entries so I have just made my donation for $100.00

I would like the presentation to be in honor of Clownin’, now deceased. My trusted A/A horse. Not a “model” candidate, but who could want for a bigger heart.
