This is the most remarkable sport, or “Cocoon Part II”

Never mind the fact that men and women compete equally. It’s the geriatrics! First 67-year-old Margie Goldstein has a go:

Then as if to say Hold my Bordeaux, 76-year-old Michel Robert beats a pack of kids:

Not just competing, WINNING. How inspiring is that?

Very cool!! I’ve been watching Margie show since…well…seems like forever! I think the first time I saw her ride in person was in Michigan, at the Bloomfield Open Hunt back in 1990. I still have a picture of her from that show. You go, girl!!

My life goal is to ride at least as long as Betty Oare, preferably Ellie Baxter

I have a customer who is gearing up to do her SECOND Century dressage ride and I might be her biggest fan.

My only encounter with Michel Robert was on a hot, dusty afternoon in Franconville during preparations for a jumpoff my jockey was in. While about 8 of us were jousting for the 2 warmup fences he was noodling around in the shade riding his lovely chestnut Lafayette who had his nose to the ground stalking a hound dog that had wandered in. That was all he did! When it was his turn he gathered up his reins, cantered into the ring and smoked the overheated lot of us.

It was! She was just really starting to make her name and do great things. Right about when I went off to college she really took off

It’s one thing if you have been riding for years and never really have any time off from riding.

A 70-something instructor at my barn has been attempting to show for the last couple seasons. It’s just sad. I think she’s finished one class without excusing herself (in lieu of falling off). These are all flat classes. The horse is very safe, but apparently too much for her. Her husband shows it in driving classes. There comes a point, for most people, when riding (or showing) is more than they can handle. It’s great that Engle and Robert can compete at their age. It’s just sad when someone keeps competing when they can no longer ride.
