I have been a racing fan for over 25 years–the type of fan that recites the last 40+ years of Kentucky Derby winners when she can’t sleep, heh. When I lost my beloved Arabian a short time ago, I remembered (even through the fog of grief) that a friend had an OTTB I’ve always liked that needed a new home. My friend got her fresh off the breeding farm 5 years ago and retrained her, but now has moved on to jumpers and as she had chips removed from her ankles, should never jump.
My heart was completely shattered losing Ana, but I started riding Coral on the weekends just to have a horsey outlet. At first, I was too devastated to think about opening my heart to another horse…but slowly, as the weeks went by… Well, now the plan is to continue weekend lessons on her then take her home in the New Year.
The mare’s name is Soft Coral, and she’s unusually well-bred (IME) for a rescue/giveaway. She’s by Cape Town (Seeking the Gold x Seaside Attraction), who sired Bird Town before being sold to the southern hemisphere. Her dam is the Tom Rolfe mare Marbesa. There is no black type among her siblings, though her sister apparently produced an ungraded stakes winner last I checked. Coral ran twice on the grass at Santa Anita late in her 3yro year but ran poorly–I think she chipped her ankles then–and since she was well-bred, they retired her to the broodmare band. But, her first foal was killed in an accident (kicked by another horse, IIRC) and then she could not get back in foal–so they rehomed her with my friend. My friend tried breeding Coral to a warmblood a few years after having her, but also had issues getting her in foal and gave up.
She was bred and trained by Dean Greenman, whom I know next to nothing about. Anyone have any info or experience with him?
Coral is very balanced and a sweet, sweet mare, and I’m really looking forward to taking her home in the new year.
