we have done competitive trial rides in the Ozarks that followed old stage coach trails… it was just very hard to even think that horses survived pulling a stage coaches up and down those narrow paths
I’m so happy knowing I can get to places like hospitals in a nice comfy car and paved highways.
Zimmerman Trail still used in Billings MT but now is paved! Most folks don’t take their horse trailers down it, but some brave souls will.
Some of the trails up the Carpathians looked like this, and horses are still pulling wagons up AND down.
Trail wasn’t one of the worst or they would have six instead of only four horses pulling. Sections or stages between Team changes were shorter when it was bad, so horses “only” had to do 15 - 20 miles. Then a new Team was put on for the next stage of the route.
