Thoroughbred At The National Horse Show

This reminds me of a horse a friend of mine had many years ago when the warmbloods were really starting to take over the show ring in this country.

He was a lovely horse, and he was a warmblood, but he had a lot of thoroughbred in him. So if you liked thoroughbreds, you could look at him and think he was a thoroughbred. And if you liked warmbloods, you could look at him and think he was a warmblood. Lol.

I have similar memories :sunglasses:
Back when WBs were just starting to show up in the Hunter rings, there was a Non-TB division.
My trainer at the time always wanted me to enter.
Number of entries was low & my TB wasn’t tattooed. But he’d come from a H/W team of trainers who ran horses at Arlington.
When he showed no speed as a 2yo, he became their Pony & I bought him as a 6yo.
Failing his Speed Test:

Ponying at The Million:

Doing what he did best for me
-circa 1989 at Lamplight-

I had him for 20yrs.
He set the bar high for the ones that followed
Apologies to COTHers who have seen these pics about a million times by now :pensive:

This article was beautiful and I love seeing TBs have their moment in the ring. It’s a nice reminder the scrawny archetype TB of yesteryear is mostly gone. The Megdalia D Oros, Giant’s Causeways, Uncle Mos, and Curlins are here to stay.

As a lifelong TB fan this line gave me pause and made me realize maybe the stereotype still exists in some circles:

“He really is deceiving. His stride is a lot bigger than you think**, and he doesn’t look like a Thoroughbred at all,**” she said of Fez (Palace Malice—Lady Lyra, Storm Creek), who won $5,639 in five starts. “He has blown us away with his talent; he’s just remarkable.”

His pedigree is rather commercial and having been involved listing many Curlin and Palace Malice kids, I’d say that’s fairly textbook for them! Curlin is really underappreciated as a sport horse sire – but not under-represented, IMHO.

I found a video of Deceiving on Youtube:

Nice horse! Exactly what a modern TB looks like to me.

Dear lord!!! An OTTB in the hunter jumper world?! Is the apocalypse now?

Truly, we need to press to eliminate off handed “compliments” about how surprised we are about TBs and OTTBs in other performance disciplines. There are TBs at every national and even international show. And Peanut won $126.50 in 3 starts so take that, Myra!

She was also surprised he was a good mover.

It is a great article, and I saw video of some of their round and they are a lovely pair.

I did cringe at two comments: “His stride is a lot bigger than you think, and he doesn’t look like a Thoroughbred at all” and “I couldn’t believe he was a Thoroughbred; he moved so well.”

Yes, I was disappointed by that, too.

Link?

I almost pre-emptively said I saw it on tiktok because I thought someone might ask for the link! Unfortunately I saw it during the finals and don’t remember the name on the account.

Shoot. I would have liked to see it.

Oh, well. Thanks.

Found it  You do need tiktok I think, but the owner/rider has a bunch of videos on her account. They’re lovely.

Thank you! I love these write-ups in COTH but am always disappointed when they don’t link video of the horse and/or round they are writing about. It seems like such a holdover from the print media days.
