Thoroughbred Pedigree - Opinions on Kingmambo?

I’m going to look at a horse this weekend and was wondering what you thought of his pedigree. He is a grandson of Kingmambo, who I searched on here, and he seems to get positive reviews for throwing nice sport horses. I intend to use the horse as a jumper or eventer if the sale goes through. I have no experience when it comes to pedigrees so any opinion is helpful! Thank you!

I’ve never met a Kingmambo-bred horse who didn’t have an absolutely lovely temperament!

I am so glad you started this thread. I have a maiden King Mambo granddaughter by Indian Ocean that I am breeding this spring. She is incredibly sweet and an in your pocket type of mare. Thank you for verifying that this seems to be their norm!

Texarakana, that’s great to hear! An even, nice temperament is a huge factor for me!

Zuri, good luck with your breeding and be sure to post pictures of her foal when the time comes

I am quite impressed with the pedigree and I would love to see the horse!

Please post a picture if/when you are able.

Good luck!

Looks great on paper for eventing/jumping.

I’m more impressed with the upfront Alydar than the Kingmambo in the pedigree. Alydars can usually really jump. As the horse is bred x 2 to Mr.P and x 3 to Raise a Native look at the right front knee and make sure it is straight and correct. Hoist The Flag is the difficult tempered one in the lot, but at least quite a ways back.

Thank you all so much for your input! I met him yesterday and he is just as quiet and sweet as can be. He is really talented and tries, tries, tries. He took quite good care of me; I haven’t ridden in almost a year and he cantered and jumped around like a gentleman. Needless to say, I left a deposit on him and should be picking him up this week  His background is that he was bred and owned by an equine veterinarian, was too slow for the track (won less than $400 in 4 starts) and was sold to this trainer who re-starts OTTBs. I am only the 2nd non-jockey rider to get on him and he was just so pleasant and willing. Nice transitions, about 95% on his flying changes, cantering lines…he is just a dream come true!

Here is a video and some pictures. Let me know what you think, both positive and negative! His front pasterns looked a touch long to me in his conformation picture but they are nicer looking in person IMO. I am not the one riding in the video or pictures so, please, no comment

Handsome fellow!

I’m always surprised Kingmambo doesn’t come up more when discussing bloodlines for sport because he truly stamps his babies with the same good looks and good conformation… and that puppy dog temperament! I suspect the lack of buzz is due to his elite sire status-- there probably just weren’t enough Kingmambo sons and daughters that trickled down to the sporthorse world when he was active. Or folks are scared off by the Mr. P/ND…

I have seen several very nice prospects from that seller. I don’t know them but I’m pretty sure that I have seen 3 or 4 very nice OTTBs shown in that ring. Lovely horse.

I love his breeding. It’s very “Florida.” Black Mambo is a genetic masterpiece but didn’t turn out to be a great runner. He has been a useful FLA sire. He is from a the family of AP Indy. His sire, Kingmambo is by supersire Mr. Prospector and out of the great runner and producer, Miesque. Some people are iffy about Mr. P but I love him. He put class and heart in his foals.
There is more sport quality via Alydar and on the female side, Blue Ensign who is out of a sibling to Ruffian. It’s very remote but I love Diplomat Way (by Nashua) for sport as well. A friend of mine has a good jumping gelding by Groomstick so there might be more quality there.

Cute guy - i would be thinking about how he uses his hind legs - esp in canter. i “do” dressage so maybe not pertinent in your sport, but they way he uses his hinds legs in canter would be a deal killer for me. they have no articulation and they move in unison - notice how his bum is high and the hind leg does not go under at all…

i would pass and keep looking. :frowning:

That’s a super pedigree for sport, once you go back a generation or two.

Lassie Dear is also the dam of Al Mufti, who got sent to South Africa where he was known for producing jumping TBs. Gay Missile is the dam of A Fine Romance’s sire, as well as Gay Mecene who has produced well for sport. Missy Baba was the dam of Raja Baba, famous for his jumping TBs. HER dam was Uvira by Umidwar, one of the foundation lines for the SF, and her sire was My Babu from the famous French Dollar line of jumping TBs.

Blue Ensign is by Hoist The Flag, a notable sire for jumping TBs and is half to Private Terms, who I believe is well thought of for sport. Laughter’s female family has been good for sport for about eight generations. Her half brother, Buckfinder, is very well thought of today. Diplomat Way produced good hunters, and his daughter here is by My Babu. It’s worth noticing that Groomstick raced for five years and had 82 starts, which shows that he was very durable. His sire Blushing Groom is also a known line for good sport horses. He’s got Nasrullah, Wild Risk, Tudor Minstrel and Emali (dam of Aberali), who is by Umidwar.

@Alita , for whatever my sample size of one is worth, I have a Kingmambo grandson (sire is Lemon Drop Kid and damline is completely different than your horse). He is a super jumper who has a great front end, can jump from any distance, and is very brave. I would not have chosen him as a dressage horse due to his small trot (improved since I bought him but still not impressive), but that was why I could afford him as a confirmed Prelim eventer with no XC faults on his record. My guy is sensitive in a good way and not generally spooky, but has plenty of go. He’s a very classy horse. Have fun with yours!

Thank for commenting! I don’t hear of people with Kingmambo OTTB’s very often around where I am so was curious what people are doing with them when they’ve retired. Glad to hear you’re getting along with your horse so well. You’re right he sounds quite different to mine

Re: where are they now

At the height of his stud career, Kingmambo stood for $300,000. Meaning the majority of mares by him have families with enough residual value that they were retained for race breeding, regardless of their performance on the track.

Most of his offspring were turfy and a lot of his progeny went over seas. He also kept fairly small books by today’s standards. While his international influence was huge with sons at stud all over the world, he didn’t leave us with a lot of North American sons in the shed. Lemon Drop Kid has certainly been the most prolific, but also has yet to leave much in terms of sons to carry on the line. The few others here have ultimately fielded small books in regional breeding programs.

Ah, that makes sense as to why there doesn’t sound like there’s a lot of them around as riding horses that I’ve been able to find. My boy’s an import which I thought was possibly why there seemed to be so few by his line locally, but sounds like there’s more to it than that.

I’d believe that. My horse’s sire (a son of Kingmambo) went to France, and then my one was imported into another country again. I’m not from North America so sounds like they’ve ended up spread out all over the place.

@Alita Oh! Sorry for the assumption. Where are you? But yes, Kingmambos ended up all over the globe, so instead of a ton in one area, there are a small number everywhere.

No problems! I figured there’d be people from all over the place so may get a few people who’ve known these guys  I’m from Australia.
