There’s a post a little farther down asking if a young TB is tattooed, is it likely they were started under saddle. The filly in question, (the Artax daughter), is one of ours and I thought I’d post a bit more info and some questions myself.
We bought Devil’s Tax and the others, (there are 5 total), at an auction recently. We went specifically to see them as we know that unfortunately, TBs, ASBs and Arabs tend to sell poorly at our local sale barns. We looked up pedigrees before the sale and figured either they would be big and fancy and likely be no-saled, or they would just be let go for whatever they brought, (which turned out to be the case), and unsurprisingly no one else in the crowd was interested in TBs being run through the ring loose, (with the exception of the meat buyer).
I tried to find info on the breeder online and couldn’t find much. His name is Gordon Marjama. The 3 year olds were foaled in NY and the 2 year olds were foaled here in MN. I’m assuming he lived in NY, and moved to MN. They were all sold with their paperwork.
The catalog only stated “Take advantage of some good-bred Thoroughbreds” for descriptions on the 5 and the sale barn owner didn’t have much info to give, in fact he didn’t even think that 4 of the horses were halterbroke, (they all are, the 2 year old filly is the only one I think wasn’t worked with much).
That’s all the info we have, no idea why he sold the horses or if any were started under saddle. At the sale barn they thought the chestnut gelding had been raced, (he is not tattooed and his records show him as unraced), but he may have been started in training? No mention of any training on the black filly but she IS tattooed, and I believe they don’t go ahead and tattoo until they are planning to race the horse?
Just an FYI: You could probably fit everything I know about TB racing in a thimble.
We plan to contact Mr. Marjama in the future, but having no idea why these horses were sold, (getting out of TBs? Death in the family? Health problems? Forced to sell for some reason?), and thinking that some situation must have caused him to have the horses hauled to and sold with no reserve at the auction, we want to wait a little while before we do.
Devil’s Tax, the Artax daughter, found a home yesterday.
We’ve had quite a bit of interest in the horses already and I’m confident we won’t have trouble finding them good homes.
I have looked up pedigrees and found info on sires, but don’t know a whole lot about their potential abilities based on their pedigrees, so thought I’d post them on here to see what you all think. The bay gelding, Glory Fever, is my favorite. I love his disposition, he’s so calm and friendly, (well, they’re ALL friendly!). His ear tips were frozen off which to me just makes him more appealing. He’s a cutie.
