Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Foster Program

Hi All,

I’m sorry if this has been posted before but I can’t seem to find anything anywhere on the internet.

Has anyone been involed with TRF’s foster program before? Or know anything more about it?

My boarder is leaving and when she leaves I do not want to leave my older thoroughbred alone (and taking on another boarder is NOT an option). My guy is in his early 20s, still able to be ridden and we show locally. In the next two to three years I plan to retire him and purchase something younger but it is not in the cards right this minute to purchase something. I can financially upkeep a second horse but the purchase price is the issue right now.

My first thoughts are that the TRF foster program would be an option to provide a companion for my guy, since it seems to be a year to year basis. And when I do decide to buy a new horse I do not have three to care for.

My other option at this point is a donkey.

Any information or advice is appreciated.

Ask in the Racing forum.

I know nothing about the foster program you ask about, but have you checked the Giveaways forum? There might be something in your area that would make a suitable companion. Of course, you’d end up with three to support for a few years.

Did you go to the TRF website? I just looked and there’s quite a bit of information, including fostering retirees and an application form. Lots of contact numbers too.

You might also try CANTER and New Vocations but specifically indicate you are just looking for a pasture companion/retiree.

Central Virginia Horse Rescue is often looking for fosters, too.

We have thoroughbreds in need of foster homes in New York. http://secondchancethoroughbreds.org/

Mid Atlantic Horse REscue

Second Call Adoption

Both of these have fosters and are GREAT to work with - I’ve fostered for both iver the years.
