Those using Quiessence, loading dose question

I have a roughly 1400 pound 7 year old that has been out of work for 2 years (not an injury) and is a handful. I feel he could benefit from magnesium during his reintroduction to work. A loading dose would be 6 ounces or 42,000 mg of magnesium. A chiro who is DVM is coming to see him this Sun and I will run this by her but is this what you all did? Is is what the manufacturer recommends I just want your anecdotal evidence.

I’ve never heard of feeding more than 30g total (including from other dietary sources), with 10g being more common, possibly 20g loading dose. You are right in your calculations per Quiessence label, though. Interesting.

ETA - I’m not sure how much magnesium is in MagRestore…I think 10g per scoop per another thread…but it’s not on the label, and the FAQs suggest it’s less than that, more like 5g/scoop? They recommend a loading dose of 4 scoops.

What is his body score? If he’s fat, a reduction in intake and a good training program will help more than the addition of magnesium.

He’s a fat boy! He looks to be an easy keeper. He is getting ready to start a training program but can get a bit explosive due to lack of work over the last 2 years.

There was a long thread on magnesium for calming over the past summer. It appears that magnesium works well if the horse is nervous because of a magnesium deficiency. If however the horse is getting excellent nutrition and is just a high energy horse extra magnesium will have no further impact. Before I bought a magnesium based calming supplement I would want to run an analysis of the whole diet and see if there is an obvious deficiency. If the horse is on a good complete supplement there shouldn’t be.

I’ve always started with less than the recommended amount and added after I see that the horse can handle it. It can sometimes cause diarrhea if the amount is “too much” for that individual horse.
