Thoughts on Pony Sire Crossgates Larasan?

I’m looking for some thoughts/opinions about Crossgates Larasan and what type of foals he produces.

When crossed with small TB mares, do his babies tend to stay ponies?

Does he add any refinement to substantially-built Welsh mares?

Thanks!

I have not bred to him…YET. I have seen him in person, the pictures do not do him justice. VirginiaBred on here just had a phenomenal looking foal by him, hopefully she will chime in.

Crossgates Larasan is 14.0 HH, so I would not recommend breeding him to a Thoroughbred mare as you are almost guaranteed to get a hony!

In my opinion, for TB mares, you’re going to want to stick with a stallion under 13.1 HH for sure.

I agree with Daventry, I think you are pretty much guaranteed a hony with that scenario. That are a lot of welsh section B’s that are on the smaller side that may suit your mare.
I am breeding my smaller section B purebred mare, who is 12.3 to Crossgates Larasan this year. She tends to produce ponies on the smaller side so I am hoping for a big medium with this cross. I have not seen him in person but out of the last 3 pony finals he has had a PF winner and a PF Reserve champion. That isn’t too bad IMO.

Thanks for the replys so far, and please keep them coming!

I am aware of his size, and his size is one of the reasons I purchased a breeding to him. The breeding was purchased for the Welsh pony I mentioned in the original post, who is 13.0 and a bit of a chunky monkey, but I’m worried the baby might be a bit too chunky if the pictures of him on the Taylor’s website are an accurate reflection of his build.

So it sounds like the TB mare is out, although I would actually LOVE to get a fancy hony for myself, but wouldn’t specifically breed for that at this point in my life!

I think he is a lovely pony stallion and has produced some very nice hunter ponies. I would not expect him to add refinement however, as the Benlea Rambler ponies are not known for that. I have a full sister to Pony Dot Com who is by Benlea Rambler, and while an outstanding mover and very nice conformationally, she is not as refined as she could be. Bred to a refined stallion, she produces very fancy, great moving foals. I also own a dam sister to Benlea Rambler and she is a a big bodied 13.2h with old time Welsh stocky build and is not refined. She too has produced great moving, fancy babies when bred to a more refined stallion. Larasan has an old, traditional quality Welsh pedigree, but the older style Welsh are generally not as refined as the more modern Section Bs. I am sure he produces great movement, great bone and substance and probably a nice temperament as well.

I have a stunner of a colt this year by him out of a small TB mare. She has smaller babies than I normally like, so Richard Taylor (who owns Larasan) and I discussed it and made the (right) decision.

He won’t give more than his height, and he’s not exactly 14 hands, but a shade under.

I have a mare who is out of a Benlea Rambler mare and really resembles her dam. She is a chunk and a half. Big bone, huge chest, my youngest’s legs pretty much stick straight out when they are on her back. But I love her. She looks like a PONY. She is very athletic and a wonderful child’s pony. She can easily carry an adult. If I was breeding her I would maybe pick a stallion slightly more refined but not too much. Some of the Section B’s being produced today are just too refined IMHO. Not my cup of tea.
The mare I am breeding to Larasan is by Cloe Olympian. She has a refined head and is not really heavy-boned. That type should be a nice cross for Larasan I think.
Do you have a photo of your welsh mare?
