As insect season approaches, does anyone know if there is a product that will repel ticks without permethrin? One of my horses is pretty allergic to tick bites but unfortunately also allergic to permethrin!!
I notice a huge difference in the number of ticks I pull off when feeding garlic. I dump a tablespoon of the granulated stuff in the feed daily.
My farrier mentioned a cedar oil spray that he finds effective against ticks…
Frontline spray works well around here
Deet. I use Deep Woods Off.
All great suggestions. I used garlic with success but I caution against it, if the horse has ever had any sort of digestive issues or ulcers.
sulpha works. A lot of trail riders would fill a sock with sulpha powder and whap it against the horses legs. I have used MTG as it is sulpha based — provided your horse isn’t allergic to it.
ive also successfully used a mix of mineral oil, water, and a small amount of Patchouli oil on the lower legs and tail.
I second this! Deep Woods Off works amazing.
I’ve had good success with Ovitrol : https://www.drugs.com/vet/vet-kem-ovitrol-plus-flea-tick-bot-spray.html

Rose geranium oil (Pelargonium Capitatum x Radens) works well – but it is a VERY strong scent
