Any recommendations for a tick preventative that kills or repels on contact?! Our dogs are on Nexguard which kills them once they attach, but that doesn’t keep our dogs from carrying ticks into the house which then bite US  !! Also, is there anything that would also deter chiggers?! We’re getting eaten alive!
Spray the yard, remove tree limbs/branches and mow everything short. Permethrin works on horses to kill ticks. Not sure how safe that would be for dogs though.
If you have a woods section, be sure to clear it of broken limbs- pile the wood and burn it. I would definitely spray the outdoor premises. Repeatedly if necessary. Create a smaller dog pen so the dogs aren’t carrying them in.
For dogs the best preventative we’ve found is Seresto collars, but it’s not really the same as a chemical spray (which you really shouldn’t use on a daily basis, especially where a dog will be able to lick.)
I am going to start trying to add rose geranium oil to a homemade spray as a repellent after just having an engorged tick pulled out of my ear this week.
I have hunting dogs and they run through tall grass daily, and there isn’t a lot I can do to prevent them picking up ticks…but I’m going to try a little extra hard now after this nightmare experience. I do tick checks regularly but it’s just a tough time of year - hot and dry, and we can pick them up everywhere.
