Ticks, ticks, and more ticks!

We live in NJ, so I understand that it is tick country. Short of never letting her outside, what has worked for fellow COTHers to prevent ticks? Dog is currently on Advantix II, but today we came home from a walk in low grass and I found 5 ticks on her - a couple had attached. Last weekend it was 4 ticks after an hour walk!

Although I loved this mild winter, it looks like it’s going to be a PITA spring/summer with the bugs…

Did any of the ticks have a white dot on its back? If so its a lone star tick and they swarm. Doesn’t carry Lymne though only Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Bravecto or Nexguard or Sorento collar and I have always liked Frontline

I’m trying the Sorento collar now. First Frontline failed for fleas. Then Advantix. Not to hijack, because this would help your exact scenario- anyone know any appropriate sprays for right before walks?

Revolution works well for my dogs in central MD, which is pretty tick laden.

I’ve heard the Frontline spray works well.

I’m in South Jersey.

My vet is pretty convinced that Parastar Plus is the way to go. I was going to switch to the Bravecto but he talked me out of it. Parastar Plus has both a repellant and a toxin that kills the ticks when they bite. Bravecto does not have both ingredients.

I have to say, since starting Parastar Plus I have not found a living, engorged tick on my dog. I sometimes find living ones that have not bitten yet. Any ones I find that have bitten are dead before they can get engorged.

Compare this to the cat flea/tick topicals which seem largely USELESS and I can’t complain about the Parastar Plus.

South Florida - Tick playground here. Lots of dogs come through our rescue and I put them in the one thing I have found that works - Preventic Collars. You cannot use them if you have Cats that rub up against your dog but they do work - you shouldn’t find an attacked tick.

For premises protection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth Food grade. I dust the area - leave it for a few days then vacuum or sweep it up (wear a dust mask).

Bravecto. It kills the tick before it attaches. I use it on both my farm dogs who often go into woods or high grass. Haven’t found a tick on them since I started Bravecto. Preventic collars work fine if you don’t have cats around the dogs. I haven’t tried the Seresto collars as they are rather pricey and I was afraid the dogs would lose them.

Is it safe for humans?

I am trying rose geranium oil on the dogs this year. Supposedly a dab on the neck and at the dock of the tail. The only thing I know so far is that my house smells pretty good right now. I hope it works.

Currently, I’m using a Preventic collar on an 80 pound dog. I haven’t found any ticks since applied, after finding a couple ticks before. I was told by a vet that the active ingredient is absorbed by the skin so the collar should be tight enough to contact the skin.

Here’s an interesting site on flea & tick control products. Originally written in 2011, it has been updated to 2016

I have been very happy with NexGard

Are you sure it is Revolution. It is only one product- selamectin and it has no label claims at all for ticks

I’ve been using Frontline Plus, which isn’t a repellent, but kills the ticks if they attach. Kind of disappointing as I was hoping for a kill before they attached.

My veterinarian is recommending the Seresto collars this year. I am going to try these and I got them for a good price from Allivet.

In the past I’ve used Green Mountain Tick Repellent, which is a natural spray. I think it helps - but you really have to continue to apply it religiously.

Rose geranium is part of the ingredient in that, so it is known to help repel ticks. I have rose geranium soap from Herbaria that I use myself and I’ve noticed I don’t have ticks walking around on my like I used to. Even just walking down the driveway to the barn I was getting one or two walking around, so that’s a relief. I still do a sort of ‘tick dance’ every time I think I feel one walking around though. :dead:

OMG SORRY. Giant brain fart. Sentinel is the heartworm med. Parastar Plus is what I am using and having luck with for fleas/ticks. Revolution is what the cats get.

Editing my prior post. SO sorry for any confusion. Parastar Plus is the product I’ve been so happy with for the dog!

It’s this product…

Thanks for the warning about Preventic collars and cats:)

I have one cat that loves to groom the face, ears, and neck of the dog that is the tick magnet.

That dog spends a lot of time at the back fence where the pine trees are. I imagine the ticks I find on him, drop off the pine trees. The other dog doesn’t have any ticks.

Neither of them have fleas.

I use Frontline Plus on everyone, including the barn cats that go hunting in the woods. I keep checking everyone and only the dog that insists on being back by those pine trees for long periods of time, has had ticks on him:(

Even though I do read that Frontline is losing its punch, it seems to be working on everyone for fleas, and on 5 of 6 cats & dogs for ticks:confused:

I haven’t done anything to the outside granny Labrador yet. She has cedar shavings in her house and that seems to be keeping the fleas and ticks off her, so far. She also isn’t the roamer she was in her younger days - generally stays within 500 feet of the house and barn:)

frontline does lose efficacy for ticks by about week three so you may start seeing them at the end of the third week and the fourth for sure. They do still die but just not as quickly. You need to do every 30 days and not once a month for best results with Frontline. It is safe to apply every three. I still think it is a useful product.

Now I am really confused, having read the link that Hosspuller posted.

I have 2 Yorkies (8 and 10 pounds) who come out to the barn, and will roll on the lawn and dig holes in the flower gardens. Does anyone else have little ankle biters? Any special recommendations for them?

I know that Heartguard is 100% Ivermectin and I saw that there are also flea and tick preventatives which are Ivermectin. Can those also be used for heartworms?

One question I specifically have: My dogs do not have long necks, and already wear collars with tags for name/phone number and rabies. Would a flea/tick collar be to much to fit around their necks?
