Tile - For Tracking Saddles?

Has anyone else thought about using or currently using this to track your saddle or other items?

Several people I know have had saddles stolen recently and wondered if anyone else thought of using Tile https://www.thetileapp.com/ hidden/attached to your saddle or other items to track it?

Some other similar products are Track R: https://www.thetrackr.com/sticker

Really neat idea.

The Tile was a lot bulkier than I was expecting it to be when I got mine in the mail. I was planning on securing it to a GoPro but once I was holding it in my hand I realized that it was too big to use for the camera. There really wouldn’t be a good place to attach it to a saddle, especially discreetly, without it getting in the way somehow, IMO.

http://www.saddlenetwork.com is what a lot of eventers have been using in California.

I got a TrackR for my saddle and love it.

I looked into that saddle network thing and just couldn’t get past feeling like it would deface my pretty tack. The TrackR is quite small (about the size of a quarter and unobtrusive.)

Lucassb, where on your saddle did you put the Track R?

Cool idea but are these really that useful for saddles? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about this, but my understanding is that if the tile/trackr is out of range of your phone, you cannot locate it directly. For you to locate your saddle, a person using the app will have to be near it before the thief finds and removes the tile/trackr.

“One key factor to remember with both of these networks is that their crowd GPS techniques rely on strong communities of users. That means that people who live in more densely populated areas, like big cities, are more likely to have luck when tapping the crowd for finding lost things. And, of course, the product has to have a lot of people using it in order for the crowd GPS to really work well.” (http://recode.net/2015/04/01/trackr-vs-tile-the-lost-and-found-face-off/)

Also, based on my experience with a Tagg dog collar, if you’re out in the boonies and cell signals are not good, you may not receive GPS data at all.

Under the skirt

Seems like you should be able to have a saddle fitter stick something like that in the flocking somewhere it wouldn’t interfere. Neat idea anyway.

I bought a used Voltaire and it had this on it. Not trackable in the same sens as a Tile but you would have to maim the saddle to get it off and my guess is somewhat of a deterrent just having it there.
