Time to talk about flea, tick, heartworm and combo protection.

There are so many choices! Everything from mix-your-own heartworm with ivermectin to spending tons more for combo protection. The combo sounds convenient, but is it worth the price? Are the orals better than the topicals?

So here’s the thread to discuss what you’ve used. Did it work or not? Where are the best places to buy?

Enlighten me.

I go to my vet and use Trifexus. I know there is conterversy about it but, personally, it is the best option for me. I have 3 dogs so having something that is a “triple threat” is very helpful. It is expensive, especially with my large dogs, but it works great. I despise topicals. Messy, greasy, pain to apply, etc etc. The pill is so much easier.

Trifexus made my dog barf. Otherwise I would be using that. I use regular old HeartGard Plus for heartworm treatment and I have been using NexGard for flea and tick control. This combo has worked great for me for the last couple of years. Plus my dog readily snarfs down both so I don’t have to go through the hassle of pilling her.

I used to use HeartGard plus, but we continued to have problems with whipworms. I’ve switched to Sentinel (which covers worms and fleas) and have no problems. We just don’t have ticks here, I make damn sure of that. Dogs don’t leave the property. If it becomes a problem, I’ll get Preventic collars.

We are infested with ticks (no fleas up here.) No topical works against them anymore. I am interested in this “Fluralaner” oral medication. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I use Revolution on my dog and my cats (different dosages).
Seems to work great!

Guin - My heart broke a little reading 32 8 week old puppies dosed 3 times, then euthanized. I understand it, I do. It just hurts.

I know, it’s horrible. There is little consolation in knowing that they breed beagles specifically for testing, but I don’t have any other ideas for a solution. At least it’s for an important test, not like “cosmetic” testing for mascara and other horrible things they do to rabbits. :frowning:

What worked for my animals regarding fleas is a 2 in 1 monthly oral flea control. It has Nitenpyram (Capstar) and Lufenuron (Program). It can be used on all sized dogs and even cats. It has helped my little dog who is extremely allergic to flea bites and she has stopped scratching plus her hair has grown back.

For heartworm protection I still use Heartgard.

Has anyone purchased from the Australian site Pet Megastore?

StG

St Germain, I buy all my heartwormer and quarterly multi-wormer from Pets Megastore. They are an excellent, extremely reputable company and have been in business for years. I have a friend in Australia who has always recommended them. Their prices are excellent and I have never had any shipping problems. I use their “Valuheart” line for heartwormer and their “Canine Allwormer” for quarterly worming. I have just ordered the new “Bravecto” oral flea/tick meds as an alternative to the useless Frontline and Advantix that no longer work on ticks in my area.

There has been talk at work about people really liking the seresta collars? Our employee vet is recommending heart guard plus next guard. I have personally always liked Sentinal.

Has anyone tried the Seresta Collar? I am seeing a tick here and there on our dog and we use the Advantix.

I see the oral is mentioned. I will also look into that.

I haven’t heard of Seresta. I’ll ask my vet about it.

I use good old Heartguard Plus and garlic from Springtime Inc for ticks.

I’ve heard the Seresta collar works well (if you are not opposed to topical) but not good if you have more than one dog and they rough house each others necks with their mouths.

We have HORRIBLE ticks this year. The dogs haven’t had one since I applied Frontline Plus. I have had several. In fact one fell off my head into my subway sandwich on Sunday (we were working in the pasture that morning). BLEH.

OH YUCK!!! :frowning:

It was pretty epic.

I ended up going with the HFT Chews from Pets Megastore. I’ll deal with ticks if I see many - if my dogs don’t go out of the yard, they should be okay. That’s about $4/mo each for flea and heartworm protection for my 5 dogs.

I just wrote an article about getting rid of ticks in your yard or property. I live in Pennsylvania, and the tick situation is getting out of control. My dogs patrol the pastures and have picked up ticks when out. I have tried many things to control them on the dogs since I hate picking them off, and they aren’t easy to see on a brindle dog.
