I’m 15 years old and am currently on a medication called Accutane for the treatment of acne, as a side effect my joint fluid has been “dried up” leading to pain and inflammation. It’s also caused inflammation around nerves in my lower back/sacrum. I won’t be able to ride for another 4-5 months but I’m so worried about my gelding losing all of his fitness that I spent so long building. Are there any in hand exercises I can do for now? I can be out there every day If necessary. I thought about just paying my trainer to exercise him, but he’s only available once a week as is and I’d perfer if the other boarders didn’t ride him. Unfortunately as of right now I can’t even Jog alongside him. Give me your opinions, should I just go ahead and hire someone or give him a few months to rest and start fresh?
I hope you are not taking Accutane any more.
I’ve still got 3 months left out of my 6 month treatment, if I stop now it’s a guarantee that my acne will come back but I don’t think its really worth not being able to do what i love. Trying to choose.
Quit the accutane now. Those side effects are insane. You can use a topical antibiotic for acne. It’s crazy to mess up your entire body for the sake of your skin. Quit now.
Where are you? Apparently accutane has been discontinued in the USA and you are experiencing severe side effects that are a sign to stop now. What you are going through in insane.https://www.rxlist.com/accutane-side…consumermultum
Yeah, googled some more and the joint pain is a rare and serious side effect and could cause permanent damage.
@Scribbler One doesn’t just get put on accutane (or more accurately, one of the generic formulations) for regular old acne. Believe me, I’ve had noticeable acne since I was seven and even with that, and going through OTC topicals, prescription topicals, birth control, and even oral antibiotics with no lasting success, no dermatologist would sign off on it. You need to be suffering from painful and often disfiguring cystic acne to get a dermatologist to sign off on it. And assuming OP is a woman, they’re under strict care from their doctor. Women can’t get refills without both the patient and doctor signing off on a negative pregnancy test. I have had one family member take it, and it was the only product that worked. And his skin has stayed within normal levels of clear for two decades since since. Accutane is not a drug handed out willy nilly, and frankly it’s probably a couple dozen times easier to get a prescription for opiates in the States than it is accutane.
@Pinto.powerhouse, if your medication is causing this much of an impact in your daily life, call your healthcare provider (or have a parent or guardian call) and chat with them about your risks and options. But don’t take medical advice from complete strangers on the internet. That’s just stupid.
Ok maybe I overstated. But I still think the side effects the OP is describing are really scary and are definitely rated rare and serious on the medical websites. At the least a serious conversation with the doctor about whether there is lasting damage.
I do not suffer from cystic acne, but I did have tons of whiteheads/blackheads that didn’t respond to any topical or antibiotic treatments. My bloodwork is normal so my derm has kept me on it, mum took me to an orthopedic surgeon and they took imaging of my knees/hips, didn’t find any arthritic changes but definitely inflammation causing pain. I told the derm I could wait out the 3 months but I will not be going into another treatment of accutane.
Yes, it’s been banned here. I live in the US, the medication I’m on is called Roaccutane which is basically just a generic that works the exact same way. As long as I don’t suffer from any permanent damage I don’t mind. If it gets any worse I’ll have to either lower my dose or be pulled off of it.
You could try long reining, the best thing to do would be to buy a book with photographs to help you along.
Jennie Loriston Clark wrote a good one several years ago so I am sure you can find a used one online.
Check out YouTube there are several trainers that work in hand, and have instructional videos.
Of course longing with side reins , ideally if you have not done any of theses things it would be best to have a trainer come and work with you.
