Tips for keeping show coat shoulder pads from getting lumpy in the wash?

I have a couple of the $230-$250-ish priced RJ Classics show coats - the soft-shell, machine-washable ones.

Every time I put them in the washing machine, the shoulder pads come out all lumpy. I even resorted to cutting the mesh lining in one jacket to access the pads and smooth them out.

Any tips for keeping them from getting lumpy? Anyone else have this problem?

i definitely have this problem but have not figured out any kind of a solution unfortunately! drives me nuts

sounds like they used a low quality shoulder pad. consider asking a tailor to replace them with one better suited for washing

Reminds me of the padding they put in bikini tops that without fail always get messed up in the washing machine. Maybe a very small safety pin on each side of the pad through the jacket fabric to hold it in place? A small, fine pin so as to not put visible holes in the jacket.

Thanks, zakattack. I thought about that too, but was afraid the pins might pull the fabric during the wash cycle.

Sigh…guess I’ll have to get out my scissors and cut a slit in the lining.

i cut them out - problem solved
