Tips for sneaking food into WEG

We ate lunch at the park on the first day, had afternoon dressage tix and freestyle tix, so we left the park after dressage, ate a packed dinner in the car, then came back in for the freestyle. For x/c we knew we’d be walking around at least for part of the day (but sitting for a while in the am) so we stuffed small bags of various snacks in pockets, and small sandwiches down the fronts of shirts, tucked in, so we had nice bellies, covered by a warm big coat  Sunday we did the same thing. Since the food budget was pretty much untouched, we all had more to spend! I got a lovely $45 girth and $40 stirrup leathers in the Stubben tent.

I was shocked that they didn’t have a food vendor out by the x/c course somewhere. They could have done so well if they had 1 or 2 out close to the course, (not disturbing the horses of course…) especially with COFFEE or hot cocoa or something early on. We were there at 7am on x/c day to get a good spot, and it took one of our friends literally 45 minutes to walk over to get us drinks, wait for the cocoa to be MADE… (25 minutes… I’m not kidding) and then walk back. Insanity.

You guys are hilarious. I wonder if they actually did the airport thing and chucked people’s contraband into the garbage. I think I’d tell them I was highly allergic and show them my epi-pen.

I brought lunch/snacks/water in each day. The first day I tried to hide it, but didn’t even bother after that, they didn’t care at all.

I didn’t actually do it this time, but will point out that plastic beverage containers are perfectly legal. Though alcohol isn’t legal, they weren’t checking that contents matched label, nor were they checking everyone’s coffee cups.

Don’t let the price of the Kentucky Bourbon Ale scare you off. It is really good stuff. $3 in the KY Experience building (no oog intended) gets you decent sized tastes of the 3 house beers. If I were going back I might have to carry in a couple bottles worth of the ale in a canteen or camelback, I confess!!!

I spoke with a woman who’d had a bunch of chocolate taken from her bag when it was searched. She was so tweaked.

Overall I don’t think anyone cared about food coming in. I thought the burritos and pulled pork sandwiches for sale were quite good, too. The french fries were also very good!

Sounds as if they are just taking the good stuff, so granola and fruit is safe;)

I was there with 8 ladies and we took food in every day. We told them someone in our group had severe allergies, and they never batted an eyelash. The last day we brought in sandwiches from Panego, chocolate, apples, etc. 99 percent of the people checking really don’t care. As one lady at the gate told me, they don’t care about food. They are worried about weapons and umbrellas, and glass. Sneak away!

no need to sneak

The first day I had food stuffed away in pockets, and at the bottom of my bag, etc. and just put my very big water bottle on the table. They felt in my bag but didnt really search it. I got a bit braver each day with a sandwich and fruit in plain view in my bag on 5th day. I was a bit concerned when I saw one volunteer peering into someone’s small purse with a flashlight, but they really had no issue with the food I brought in.
They are taking a practical and proper (IMO) approach - no umbrellas, no glass, no sharp objects - they quite understand that most of us cannot afford multiple $4 water / pop bottles or a $12 sandwich each day.

There is a water tap near the main portopotty area in the stadium. Perfectly good water to refill one’s water bottle with!

We (usually a group of five) brought in Subway sandwiches every day, just put them in coat pockets. Also on various days chocolate, granola bars, and a giant bag of pretzel M&Ms for x-c day. And I always had about four bottles of Propel water. The only issue I had was one day the bag lady (snort) that was searching my bag tried to tell me that only one plastic drink bottle was allowed. Of course, there was no limit listed on the sign right next to her, and at that point I’d been bringing in multiple bottles for several days, so I argued about it and got them in. For crying out loud, she was counting bottled water?

The only stuff I bought on site was bourbon barrel ale (yum!), a pair of gloves at BofB on a particularly cold day, a $5 eventing program, and some great soft cheese with berry cookies at the Normandy tent. For $14 the cheese and cookies made a good picnic for three and was the food buy of the place. Nine days at the park and spent under $100 at the venue. Nine nights at the Motel 6 totaled $362. Subway veggie sandwich for lunch almost everyday. Major expense was the tickets, then gas to drive ten hours each way, $20 per day parking, and good dinners out with friends. It was a fantastic week, and we are already plotting for WEG 2014 in Normandy (having done Aachen and Kentucky, I’m sold on WEG as a fantastic way to see the best horses and riders in the world).

Me too. If I am going to spend a fortune, I might as well do it with some French ambiance!

I also had no problems bringing in food. I went to WEG for 6 days. Carried a quart sized Nalgene bottle full of water, several granola bars and fruit in a backpack. I did buy lunch, thought that the salads were as good as I can get at any faster food type restaurant. Their apples were Delicious! Nice hard crisp Gala’s. And I’m normally not a Gala fan.

Congratulations on getting a good hotel rate!

Nine nights at one of the dingy motels in Richmond (40 minutes from KHP) that were blocked out for the media: over $1600.00.

I read the title of this thread and thought “people were sneaking food in?”
We just carried it in. No need to hide it.

No Sneaking Here Either

We’ve been here since Monday for the Show Jumping and have walked right in with a bottle of water, granola bars, mini chocolate bars, goldfish crackers and trail mix. Yes, the food prices seem high but in line with any other sporting event and quite good.
