For a barn coat, I’d look for something that is closer to knee length than hip length. The extra wind blockage over your thighs can make a big difference. I have a waterproof, windproof Hunter brand coat that I wear to the barn. It is fairly roomy without being bulky. The air space adds extra insulation and it has big pockets that fit lots of horse treats. I bought it on end of season clearance a few years ago and don’t see anything similar on their website now, unfortunately.
That is a great idea! I think it would work with the SSG fleece gloves I already have, which is a plus.
Would it be something like this?

If my other layers fit underneath, I probably don’t need the coat to be insulated, just somewhat heavy and wind-blocking. I have a Kerrits rain jacket but it just isn’t heavy enough.
I suppose I could break out my HEAVY blaze-orange rain poncho, but it’s not great in the wind. Plus who knows how the horses would react! My mare would get over herself, but I am not sure about my BO’s two “hot, sensitive” type mares, especially the big baby (coming 4, 17.2 at least, and “young for her age” which is to say very silly.)
A wind proof rain shell may be your best bet if you’re happy with your base and midlayers - I’m not sure what a “heavy” uninsulated layer is exactly. The weight comes from the insulation. Maybe a ski jacket? Those are wind and water resistant usually, but lightly warm since you generate a lot of body heat while skiing. They’re also typically longer, but plenty of “plain” shells come in longer trench coat lengths.
That is similar, but mine is lightly insulated. I am less bundled up on the base layers because I get really warm when I ride (no cute puffy riding vests for me!)
ETA: I’m not sure how cold your “cold” is, but an uninsulated outer layer won’t hold in a layer of warmer air the way something with some loft will.
