Tips to keep the dogs off the couch

My one dog has an acl injury so I really need to keep them off the couch at night when we go to bed. what worked for you?

We use a Scat Mat to keep the cat out of the bathroom… I imagine it would keep dogs off the couch but might get a strong reaction the first time it is touched!

Keep in mind - I accidently step on this thing all the time, I move my foot quickly but it does not hurt… more of a large startle

Dog in a crate when you are not directly supervising it. That’s really the only answer - especially during post-surgical rehab. We also were advised to keep a leash on him even when we were supervising, and actually only let him “loose” in our carpeted bedroom (while we were there) because the rest of our house had hardwood floors.

I slept on a mattress on the floor with my dog, because he normally slept in our bed with us. So the other option would have been to crate him overnight, which I didn’t want to do, since he had to be in a crate during the day for a lot of his recovery.

A crate. After an ACL injury, you want him resting quietly to heal.

The scat mat sounds like a bad idea in this situation. Your dog will jump onto the couch & then startle, leaping/falling off the couch, which is exactly what you don’t want to happen.

Can you use a fence to block off the areas with furniture? I know that’s inconvenient, but then there won’t be any temptation for him to jump up.

If your dogs are generally super quiet, then you could consider steps to get on/off the couch. That would give him the option to walk quietly onto the couch. If there’s any chance he’ll do a flying leap off anyway, then this is a bad idea.

So… a crate

I wish I could do a crate. He freaks out big time. Hes a rescue dog with some “issues”

Then baby gates to section off a smaller section of the house with nothing climbable may be the way to go. If he can tolerate it, an exercise pen can confine him too.

that’s a good idea!

Yes, get a “puppy corral” and set it up somewhere for him, with a bed in it…carpet underneath if possible so no slipping.

Coleman emergency blanket, it is silver foil-like material, 52" x 82", and less than $5.00 @ Dick’s Sporting Goods. In the camping area. Drape it over the couch.

No good advice here. We had to put unfolded folding chairs on the couch to keep the one off. He finally stopped, but I am not sure why!
